Attention all Saskatonians.... Saskatoon will be experiencing a significant change with the upcoming civic election. We will not only have a new mayor, but we will also have five new city councillors. Unlike past elections, we are not aware of any pre-election panel discussions with all candidates offered this year. In the past, these panels provided constituents an opportunity to get to know who is running for the position of councillor, and to learn about their interests and objectives. However, the NSBA (North Sask Business Association – of which I serve on their board of directors) together with the Combined Business Group, has invited all councillor candidates to participate in a networking event to provide attendees a chance to mix and mingle with them, hear their platform, and how each candidate, if elected on November 13, intends to support the community and business. This event will be held at TCU Place on October 24 from 4-6PM and it is FREE. Finger food will be provided so they are asking people to pre-register. It is easy to do by clicking on this link. Combined Business Group Pre-Election Candidates Event | NSBA (nsbasask.com) Please consider attending this important event and show these prospective city councillors how much our community cares about who’s in office, as well as learn about how they plan to support their respective community and businesses. Sadly, I will be on a plane during this event and will not be able to attend, but I feel it is important, so I wanted to share this opportunity with each of you and respectfully encourage you to attend. Info on the candidates can be found here – however, meeting them in person and asking questions is always more valuable. https://lnkd.in/gyGHuT7M I hope you find this information helpful and of interest.

I’m going slightly off piste this morning… Institute and Faculty of Actuaries #IFoA #actuaries Elections. Member engagement. Let’s make this the most engaged election yet. To all election candidates (in the comments below), we have a massive opportunity here to increase member engagement. Many of you are standing because you want to help the IFoA evolve, and we need as many diverse voices with different experiences, different opinions, and different challenge on Council as possible. This way we can figure out the best way forward. I would like to see this being the highest engaged #IFoA election we’ve ever had. From my own memory, to have 24 actuaries standing for Council is the largest ever. Year | turnout | votes | min to get elected 2023 | 13.4% | 2097 | 536 2022 | 10.7% | 1550 | 434 2021 | 12.9% | 1828 | 637 2020 | 12.8% |1736 | 515 2019 | 13.4% | 1751 |482 2018 | 18.0% | 2240 | 645 2017 | 12.1% | 1428 | 390 From my own experience of standing twice, I’d suggest the following: 🗳️Play a fair game - engage all the candidates. We’re in this together, and 8 of them you will need to work with! 🗳️ Tell people why you are standing for Council. Be insightful! 🗳️ Be seen. Be seen on LinkedIn, if you can speak at conferences do. 🗳️ If you need a minimum, of say 600 votes to be elected, you will likely need to engage with 600 voting actuaries. Email them, call them, send them a message on LinkedIn/imessage/whatsapp… 🗳️Some people vote early, don’t wait until last minute. Some vote late, keep the momentum over the election month. If there are 24 of you, and you each had 600 unique votes… that’s a lot of votes and engagement!! Let’s put Council back on the map. All members who are eligible to vote will receive an email from Civica Election Services with an individual link to cast their vote. To my LinkedIn experts, any other advice you would share here? I wish you all the best of luck Kartina Tahir Thomson Kalpana Shah-Sheth Paul Sweeting Matt Saker Peter Tompkins Sandy Trust Matthew Pearlman Katie Sokolowski Mukami Njeru Hitesh Shah Sunil Sharma, FIAI FIA Oliver Bettis Dermot Grenham Cherry Chan Kudzai Chigiji Nico Aspinall Charles Cowling Matthew Edwards Simon Jones Yan Liu FFA PhD BSc Janet Moss Melanie Puri Alan J Rae Hilary Salt Xi Cynthia Yuan,

Do presidential elections impact markets? This article was included in my biweekly newsletter this morning. Daken Vanderburg, our Chief Investment Officer, touches on four frequent statements heard around elections: 1. Investors should avoid election years 2. Markets are always better when (insert party) get elected 3. One party spends, the other saves 4. One party borrows, the other doesn't At the end of the day, our country is massive and complex. With the structure of our government, not one person has the ability to drastically change the expectations for how capital markets will perform. Stay focused on the long term.

*Talking about Elections* One of the best things, indeed the greatest privilege, of doing what I do for a living -- helping companies improve, need you ask! -- is the brilliant 'thinkers' that I meet through my work. People who keep you on your toes. Tomorrow, I'm lucky enough to have persuaded 3 of these thinkers to come together for a "talk" about elections and how governments fare when they get into power. As everyone knows, this year has been an historic one for elections. More than 2 billion voters (in over 50 countries) have headed to the polls. We won't be talking about them all! But, we will be discussing the 4 month old UK Government (the UK's first Labour Government in 14 years), how it's fared so far, what it's got right and wrong. We will also briefly touch upon last week's US presidential election. Our live event (in St James’ Park, London) is jam-packed -- although I understand that 2 places have become available (so if you want to come, PM me). But as this discussion is a "hot topic", we have also arranged a livestream too. (Sign up below). This Thursday, November 14th, 6pm GMT. The three incredible guest panellists joining us are: 1. The awesome Janine Gibson, the Financial Times’ Weekend Editor. Janine also edited a major title in the US 10 years ago, so will bring some media savvy to the proceedings. 2. The effervescent Mike Soutar, serial entrepreneur, business advisor to many, champion of small businesses and, of course, a stalwart on BBC’s The Apprentice. ("Do you own the website domain? No you don't. I bought it.") Donald Trump of course starred in the US version of the same show. Let's see what Mike does next ... 3. The brilliant Simone Finn, Swansea's own Baroness no less, who was Chief of Staff at No. 10 Downing Street, when Boris Johnson was PM. Simone knows all about what the engine room of Government looks like, and how things can go well / go badly wrong. Three panellists, clever, charismatic … and erudite. As ever, a 4th thinker, the insightful, persistent, multi-award-winning editor-in-chief that is Alan Rusbridger will be steering the conversation, and asking the questions. Some easy. Some less so. A massive thank you to the excellent team at Prospect Magazine. 90 people will be attending in person (2 places left) ... but a live stream is available to sign up to below. https://lnkd.in/eXRrk9_y I'm flying back from Q5's Houston office overnight to be there … so will be coffee'd up and raring to go!
