Hi Josh, I agree with your assessment and see several risks to companies who are excited by the idea of AI agents. They may not fully grasp what it will take to get where they want to go. In past technology implementations, I've seen the business case for the system built around eliminating positions due to anticipated efficiencies. The problems were many: the experts who knew the details of the process were let go before their knowledge was codified; consultants overestimated efficiencies for just the reason mentioned—the system functionality was not mature and not yet geared to the business; and professionals were let go who were still needed to consult with stakeholders and perform higher level services. Upskilling talent is the solution needed for bringing in AI agents rather than assuming the AI can do their job and they are no longer needed. Ideally, AI is freeing them up to do more important work that required original and creative thinking and problem solving. We need better models for building realistic business cases for new technology and more realistic descriptions of the technologies' capabilities to enable better management decision making and investments.
