You likely interact with people with disabilities every day. People with disabilities are your friends, family members and neighbors. Perhaps you have a disability, too. About 22 million (11%) working-age people in the United States have a disability (2022 American Community Survey). Did you know, disability has a specific definition in the context of policy and employment? We explain that and more in our new toolkit, available at https://lnkd.in/edWr2WUk

Tomorrow is International Disability Day, so I would like to take this opportunity to point out that this day is typically used to celebrate the diversity and individuality of people with disabilities. Because of cultural biases and power dynamics, individuals with disabilities feel under-represented, abandoned, and underestimated. This is something that people often forget. One of the best books I read last year was Demystifying Disability by Emily Ladau. It’s such a practical, accessible account of how to be an ally to people with disabilities. Maybe you have people with disabilities in your team, maybe you send comms to people with disabilities, or maybe you’ve not thought much about how to accommodate disabilities before - I would highly recommend this book, it’s incredibly helpful and a quick read too!

Families caring for members with disabilities face unique challenges that require a legislative support. Key policies include: • Comprehensive Family Support: Legislation should ensure universally accessible services that strengthen families socially, emotionally, physically, and financially. • Educational Rights: Laws like the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) guarantee free and appropriate public education tailored to individual needs, promoting inclusive learning environments. • Anti-Discrimination Measures: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination, ensuring equal access to employment, public services, and accommodations. • Parental Rights Protection: Guidelines affirm the rights of parents with disabilities, ensuring they receive equal access to parenting opportunities without discrimination. Implementing and enforcing these policies are crucial steps toward empowering families, promoting inclusivity, and ensuring that individuals with disabilities receive the support and opportunities they deserve. #DisabilityRights #FamilySupport #InclusivePolicy #LegislativeAction

A disability is not a disqualifier from being required to take a polygraph, be video tapped and audio recorded for a job interview turned interrogation for a job interview that is non officer uniform. In fact it exzaeberates the health issues.
