Last week I spent an afternoon at Fredrikstadkonferansen 2024. It's a small town about an hour outside of Oslo with 90k inhabitants. They have this odd entrepreneurial quirk down there - with a true startup culture that grew out of previous successful tech companies. I saw an AI startup that warns doctors and nurses about behavior that increase secondary infections among patients. I saw a startup that does self driving postal trailers. I saw a startup doing AI specialized hardware accelerators. There was even more AI startups, 10-20 in number. AI with hardware. In a 90k inhabitants Norwegian town. No VC in Silicon Valley knows this. They believe there is no AI startups in Europe. They believe Big Tech Monopolies is a sign of a healthy economy, because they offer an exit strategy for startups. Fact is that the US has too few ideas and too much money - so even bad ideas get funding. In the EU there is too many ideas for the limited money available for funding - which means good ideas might never even be funded. When it comes to the Startup Economy in the EU - Europe has an infrastructure problem in getting money to the right startups bets, and a regulatory hurdle in that startups are not necessarily incentivized as an investment. But, there is no "regulation leads to AI startups being impossible". Whoever thinks the CEOs of Google, Microsoft, etc... is worried about the 10 person startup in Berlin when they talk about AI regulation in the EU is delusional. They care about their ability to innovate - which they do by protecting against startups offering the same feature... it's not really innovation, it's exploiting a captive eco-system. So, what they are saying is "Because of regulation, we find it too risky to compete freely with startups in the EU - and would rather operate in countries that let us exploit our ecosystems to force users to chose our features"
