Study Suggests MRI Scans Could Replace Biopsies in Prostate Cancer Screening Could MRI scans replace biopsies in prostate cancer screening? A promising new study from Europe suggests that in some cases, men with elevated PSA levels may be able to skip traditional biopsies and rely on MRI scans instead. For many men, an abnormal prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test result is the first sign of possible prostate #Biopsies #MRI #ProstateCancer >>> Read more

The Journal of Clinical Investigation is rarely featured here although it publishes a very high-quality and impactful work. You can read here https://lnkd.in/dha5DPFS a very interesting work on a splice variant of Androgen Receptor (AR), the AR-V7, which plays an important role in #prostate #cancer bone #metastasis. The transcriptional program induced by the AR variant can be inhibited by CDK9 inhibitors, which may open ways for treatment/prevention of Prostate Cancer metastasis. #cancerresearch #cellbiology #geneexpression #prostatecancer #oncology #WeeklyRead #gotoyourpathologist

"Glioblastoma is a particularly aggressive brain tumor that at present is incurable. Cancer doctors can extend patients' life expectancy through operations, radiation, chemotherapy or surgical interventions. Nevertheless, half of patients die within twelve months of diagnosis. Drugs that are effective against brain tumors are difficult to find, as many cancer drugs often can't cross the blood-brain barrier to reach the brain. This limits the choice of possible treatments. Neuro-oncologists have thus been searching intensively for some time to find better drugs that can reach the brain and eliminate the tumor." #cancer #oncology #braintumors #antidepressant

💫🌟Whole-body MRI for staging in high-risk prostate cancer 🔬 Study compared WBMRI with conventional imaging (CT and BS). OncoAlert Advanced Prostate Cancer Consensus Conference 📊 WBMRI showed higher sensitivity in detecting lymphatic metastases (60% vs. 20%, p = 0.031). 🦴 For bone metastases, WBMRI performed similarly to CT + BS (sensitivity 25%). 🏥 WBMRI is proposed as a "one-stop-shop" option for better staging in HRPCa. 💡 Implications: Improved surgical and radiotherapy planning where PSMA PET is not available. The future of using MRI scans in diagnosing prostate cancer looks even more promising. A recent study published by the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) has revealed very encouraging results in using MRIs for prostate cancer screening. It identified more cases of prostate cancer compared to traditional methods such as blood tests for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) or ultrasound. While further research is necessary, this study suggests that MRI tests could potentially play a role in future prostate screening programmes. 🌟 #ProstateCancerScreening #MedicalAdvancements #ProstateCancer https://lnkd.in/eQvFSjdn

Good discussion about the merits of MRI screening for prostate cancer to avoid unnecessary biopsies and treatment. It's argued that we need something much better than PSA to detect cancer, and then use 'active surveillance' rather than immediate treatment for slow-growing tumours.
Can MRIs ensure prostate cancer screening does more good than harm?

In a recent study, PSMA-PET/CT was able to detect metastases in 46% of patients who were classified with high-risk non-metastatic HSPC on conventional imaging, suggesting that conventional scans may routinely understage patients with prostate cancer. https://lnkd.in/e7CwHjUz
