Key updates:
- Private yachts: No changes in protected area access.
- Charter yachts: Restrictions apply for ticketed passengers; full charters follow private yacht rules.
- Fast ice: Rarely relevant for yachts.
- Polar bears: A 300m retreat distance is required within 12nm of the coast, but this doesn’t apply in pack ice.

Thanks to BOAT International Media for including us in this story on the superyacht sales in South-East Asia where together with our Simpson Superyachts Sales Director James Clayton we shared views on sales trends and customer profile evolution.
"Southeast Asia's superyacht scene is experiencing a significant boom. According to #BOATPro, the number of #superyachts in the area has increased by 29 per cent over the past five years, going from 227 in 2019 to 293 in 2023. According to BOATPro, more than 62 per cent of yachts in Southeast Asia sit between 24 and 40 metres, whereas 70-metre-plus yachts represent approximately 5.5 per cent of the total fleet."
“We believe strongly it'll be the fastest growing market in #yachting too,” said James Clayton, director of sales at Simpson Superyachts. “There's huge appeal for yacht #ownership, particularly among younger generations."
"According to Clayton, the region also benefits from year-round boating conditions, meaning it is not restricted to a seasonal market. “In winter, for example, Hong Kong has some great boating, but so does Thailand and Indonesia, and all are paired with rich local cultures and largely unexplored cruising grounds,” he said. “The only thing we’re lacking is the infrastructure.”

Yachting in the Mediterranean is a dream for many and choosing the optimal time can enhance your experience. When choosing the best season for your adventure, consider your preferences for weather, activities, and crowd levels.
Let's look at a few things to consider:
𝑷𝒆𝒂𝒌 𝑺𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒏 (𝑱𝒖𝒏𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝑨𝒖𝒈𝒖𝒔𝒕)
The weather is warm and sunny, with temperatures often reaching 30°C or higher. Sea Conditions are mostly calm with predictable winds, ideal for smooth sailing. This is the height of the social season, with numerous events, festivals, and bustling nightlife. Popular destinations are vibrant and lively. Expect busy marinas and popular anchorages to be crowded. Booking in advance is essential!
𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑺𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒔 (𝑴𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝑱𝒖𝒏𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒐 𝑶𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒃𝒆𝒓)
The weather is pleasant with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C, with a small chance of rain. Sea conditions are generally calm with consistent winds making for enjoyable sailing. These months offer a more relaxed atmosphere whilst you can still enjoy local festivals and events, but with fewer crowds. The smaller crowds will make for easier mooring and an overall more tranquil experience.
𝑶𝒇𝒇-𝑺𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒏 (𝑵𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒐 𝑨𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒍)
Expect cooler temperatures and higher chances of rain, especially from December to February. Rougher seas and unpredictable weather can make sailing more challenging and therefore you need a more experienced crew. Many tourist facilities and marinas may be closed or operate on reduced hours. However, this can be a fun time to mingle with the locals and explore the cultural and historical aspects of the Mediterranean without the tourist rush. Off-season yachting offers a more peaceful and secluded experience.
𝑻𝒊𝒑𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑺𝒂𝒇𝒆 𝒀𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈:
~ Work with a competent and safety-focused crew.
~ Safety briefings and equipment location are crucial when boarding a yacht.
~ Ensure there will be a crew member on watch, 24/7.
~ Pay attention to the captain’s instructions.

🌧️ The impacts of weather on the Mediterranean Season 🌧️
The weather significantly influences the Mediterranean yachting season, shaping the timing, duration, and overall experience of all yachting operations.
Weather Patterns Leading to a Late Start:
🥶 Prolonged Cool Temperatures: An extended period of cooler spring temperatures can delay the start of the yachting season. If the sea temperatures remain low, it might not be conducive for water activities and comfortable cruising, putting potential charter guests and owners off until a later date.
⛈️ Spring Storms: Late-season spring storms and unsettled weather patterns can lead to rougher seas, making early yachting less appealing and potentially hazardous.
☔️ Extended Rainy Periods: Higher-than-average rainfall in the early spring can impact visibility and the overall enjoyment of yachting, leading yacht owners and charter companies to postpone the start of the season.
Implications of a Late Start:
🥵 Condensed Peak Season: With a late start, the peak yachting season might become more condensed, with the majority of activities packed into a shorter time frame. This can lead to increased competition for marina berths and anchorages.
💰 Higher Demand: A delayed start can result in a sudden surge in demand for yachting services, charters, and marina spaces once the weather improves, potentially driving up prices and making reservations more challenging.
🔨 Maintenance and Readiness: Yachts that were held in port or dry dock for longer maintenance periods might experience rushed preparations to be ready for the season, impacting the thoroughness of checks and readiness.
What other implications do you think the weather has on the Mediterranean yachting season?
