In the rapidly advancing age of artificial intelligence (AI), the protection of children from potential risks has become a paramount concern on a global scale. On the 1st of October, 2024, the Association of African Universities, the University of Nottingham, and the Ethical Data Initiative held a panel discussion on Child Protection in the Age of AI as part of their Ethical Data Discussion Series. The event brought together education professionals, child protection experts, and legal experts, to discuss the pressing need to influence and shape national and international policies governing children’s safety online. It highlighted the importance of international and interdisciplinary collaboration, and evidence-based recommendations in this complex domain. It is the first-ever international legally binding treaty aimed at ensuring that the use of AI systems is fully consistent with human rights, democracy and the rule of law. » ✅ « The treaty provides a legal framework covering the entire lifecycle of AI systems. It promotes AI progress and innovation, while managing the risks it may pose to human rights, democracy and the rule of law. To stand the test of time, it is technology-neutral. »

🇹🇷 TR in comments. 🎉 For the second day running, Strasbourg is at the heart of a landmark AI governance event, also marking a momentous chapter in history. After years of dedication and the combined efforts of two committees, the first international convention on AI has reached a provisional agreement under the CAI. This milestone highlights the significance of achieving such consensus, amid a journey filled with both triumphs and challenges. 📅 Anticipated to be adopted in May, this convention sets the stage for a series of AI governance requirements that would be applicable on a global scale. 🔍 As I reserve specific comments for the public release of the compromise text, it's important to reflect on two key points. Firstly, despite potential critiques, the almost impossible task of uniting numerous governments behind a single convention cannot be understated. This agreement marks a critical step towards aligning global AI governance with the principles of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law, however broad or 'flexible' it becomes in governing certain aspects of AI. We’ll see a wave of AI governance steps taken even in countries that were silent so far. 🏛️ Secondly, the convention's inclusion of a provision for risk assessment underscores the universal importance of AI governance and risk management, mirroring our mission at Holistic AI. This development affirms the escalating global relevance of these practices. 🙌 Observing and contributing to the dialogue, even in a small way, has been an honor. A special shoutout to the national delegations, whose dedication and hard work deserve immense applause. Their commitment beyond humane working hours is paving the way for a safer and more regulated AI future.
