Day 225 / 366 A ticking time bomb for NDT - Are we ready? 👇 👇 👇 It's fascinating and scary to see the statistics shared by Lavender International NDT on the average age and experience of NDT technicians. With the average starting age for a career in NDT being 26 and the average technician (48 years old) already being well past the halfway point to retirement, this highlights a crucial issue we face across many industries: an aging workforce paired with a growing skill shortage. As society evolves, so too must our approach to career development and education. The fact that many technicians start their careers later in life begs the question: are we doing enough to introduce young people to vital, yet perhaps under-publicized, fields like NDT early on? Lavender International's proactive stance on engaging school-age students is commendable. By educating and inspiring the next generation about the possibilities within NDT, they are not only addressing potential skill shortages but also ensuring that these essential roles continue to be filled by passionate and skilled professionals. But this challenge isn't unique to NDT. Across sectors, we're seeing a need for innovative approaches to attract and train younger talent, particularly in fields where the workforce is aging. It's not just about filling jobs—it's about sustaining industries that are critical to our infrastructure, safety, and daily lives. As we as businesses navigate these challenges, there's an opportunity for all of us to think about how we can better connect education with industry needs. How can we better align our education systems, career guidance, and apprenticeship programs such as The British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) apprentice programme ( https://lnkd.in/e6wv7Ftc ) to not only meet the demands of today but to anticipate the needs of tomorrow? The future of our industries—and indeed our society—rests on the shoulders of today's youth. Their creativity, resilience, and passion are key to overcoming the challenges we face. By fostering their growth and showing them the paths they can take, we can help secure a vibrant future for all. As technology moves towards a more and more digital prevalence and the normalisation in our day to day life of Artificial Intelligence in the Inspection Industry we have and obligation of ensuring these apprenticeships are aligned to the developing technology To the young people out there: keep pushing boundaries, asking questions, and exploring the possibilities. You are the leaders of tomorrow, and we are here to support you on your journey. Today I want to share an interesting statistic with you 📈 ➡️ The average age of an NDT technician is 48 years old with 21.6 years of experience (PQNDT, 2013). This puts the average starting point for an NDT career at age 26. At 48 years old, this average technician is 17 years from a typical retirement age of 65, well past the halfway point in his or her career. This also indicates that, on average, technicians are starting their careers well after their school careers end. Which is why at Lavender International we take the responsibility to recruit new technicians EARLIER, seriously. -To educate and inform school age youngsters about NDT. -To attend schools, colleges and universities. -To help inform students of where NDT can take you, how you can progress and how it impacts the world 🌍 Whether it is careers days, apprenticeship events, offering work experience or providing advice to young people we meet in every day life. It all makes a difference! Let's celebrate the vibrancy and energy of our young people, who are the future leaders of tomorrow. Let's honour their creativity, resilience, and passion for positive change. To the youth out there – you inspire us every day! #InternationalYouthDay

Thought provoking session yesterday at the HSE Science Labs, Buxton for a day titled "When Welding goes Wrong" Far too many preventable weld failures in UK and several things stood out for me. Firstly the participants seemed to be in agreement that the general reduction of skills across the Industry is in part responsible for the demise in standards, for example welders not completing recognised apprenticeships and inexperienced Inspectors being stand out examples. Secondly so called "Certification Bodies" are going through the motions and not carrying out tangible investigative assessments, awarding re-certification as a tick box exercise. Thirdly Senior Management focus has moved away from Competence, Quality and Training Investment. And finally Clients and End Users as "Duty Holders" under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 the HSE is coming for you. Not your Contractors or your Consultants, YOU. The HSE emphasis on the day was very much focused on the "Duty Holders" Regulation 5. (1) Every employer shall make and give effect to such arrangements as are appropriate, having regard to the nature of his activities and the size of his undertaking, for the effective planning, organisation, control, monitoring and review of the preventive and protective measures. (2) Where the employer employs five or more employees, he shall record the arrangements referred to in paragraph (1).

So my advice to any young person doing GCSE exams at present is do you want a Career and the opportunity to earn a lot of money but you will have to work hard and have the can do attitude and it’s not like been a “YOU TUBER” Company’s and the new government need to invest in apprenticeships and Walk the Walk as the clock is ticking and Infrastructure projects will not build themselves Welding has maintained its position as an important profession for generations, with skilled welders being employed in a wide range of industry sectors, from ae… https://lnkd.in/e285bGAM
