Safety Alert: fatality of a crew member and the collapse of two other crew due to heat exhaustion On 27 July 2023, a bulk carrier was berthing at the port of Mesaieed, Qatar. Whilst the first mooring lines were being passed ashore, the bosun and two other crew members of the forward mooring station collapsed, one after another. They were brought to the accommodation, where they were tended to by other crew members. After the vessel was moored, the chief officer reported that he, too, was feeling unwell. All four crew members were transferred to a local hospital. The bosun was declared deceased by paramedics, and this was confirmed at the hospital. All four crew members were diagnosed to have suffered from heat exhaustion with the bosun suffering from a heat stroke that led to his death. The investigation concluded it was highly likely that long hours of physical work on deck, in hot and humid weather conditions, had contributed to the crew members’ collapse. Hospital reports did not indicate that the crew members suffered from any medical conditions, other than those related to heat. The investigation neither considered the bosun’s health nor that of any of the other crew members, as a contributory factor to this occurrence. The Malta Marine Safety Investigation Unit notes that: “On-site treatment of heat stroke is crucial and should include, (most importantly) rapid, effective, and continuous cooling, rapid rehydration, and effective control of restlessness and convulsions. For cooling, the casualty of a heat stroke should be moved to a cooler place, have their clothing removed, and external cooling methods should be applied, such as: cold packs on the neck, armpit and groin; continuous fanning; and spraying of the skin with water of temperature between 25 ℃ to 30 ℃.” and that “it appeared that the crew members were not aware of all actions that needed to be taken, in the event of a heat stroke casualty, particularly the requirement to cool the casualty’s body with water and ice … circumstances at that time did not allow the crew members to refer to the available medical publications on board...” Recommendation: members are advised to review their arrangements for prevention of exposure to hazardous temperatures and identify if further action is required including but not limited to protection and emergency response training. Skuld sees a variety of different people claims in connection with the operations of our insured vessels. Most of these claims are either personal injury or illness claims. Injuries can happen with crew or passengers, but also with people not carried on board, such as service providers boarding the vessel, such as pilots, local agents, surveyors, supercargoes, and stevedores. Proper medical training for your crew can save lives in case of a major accident. Each vessel should have at least one medical officer who regularly participates in medical training courses to refresh their skills in providing first aid and basic medical assistance. The vessel should also be furnished with sufficient medication and medical equipment. We also recommend having at least one crew member trained in applying mental first aid. Skuld can advise on suitable course providers. Equip each vessel with the contact details of a telemedical service that the crew can contact in case a fellow crewmember gets sick or is injured. Several high-quality telemedical services are available, with medics on the other end of the telephone who provide this service free of charge. Early involvement of a telemedical service can save lives. Skuld can guide you if you need contact details. Read more about people claims in our loss prevention booklet for seafarers. This booklet is intended to guide seafarers who want to learn about what we, Skuld, as their global marine insurer, can offer and how they can contribute to reducing any damage or loss to people, the environment, the vessel, and her cargo. We hope this booklet will be a valuable resource for seafarers serving on board. Contact your local Skuld office to get your hands on this booklet and stay safe at sea! 🌊 #Seafarers #Lossprevention #restassured.

Each person trained is a potential life saved. Travelling by boat to provide onsite training for a marine client while passing current and future clients. We are driven to provide the highest standard of medical emergency training and equipment to the maritime industry because we know what it is to be offshore caring for a crew member having a medical emergency. You either have a set of skills you can apply to make a difference, or you don't. In an emergency we don't rise to our expectations, we fall to our level of training. You open the first aid kit and want to know how to use what's in it. You activate your emergency plan and it's so familiar from the training scenarios that were relevant to your environment and the work you do. We do what we do because it matters and if we are going to do it why not do it exceptionally well. #marinefirstaid #safetyatsea #maritimeindustry #marineindustry
