Transportation needs to be accessible to persons with disabilities, but many still encounter barriers. In our 2023 report, Accessible Transportation for Persons with Disabilities, we found that the Canadian Transportation Agency had insufficient tools and enforcement staff to address all the accessibility barriers found. In the spirit of National AccessAbility Week and its theme, Forward Together: Accessibility and inclusion for all, read our report and learn about the federal government’s efforts to improve accessibility in Canada: https://ow.ly/xjS450RYrIc

This year's theme, "Transformative Solutions for Inclusive Development: The Role of Innovation in Fueling an Accessible and Equitable World," emphasizes the importance of creating innovative solutions to ensure accessibility and equity for everyone, including those with disabilities that are not always visible. At Care Initiatives, our mission of improving the quality of life for our residents, patients, and their families during life's health transitions through compassionate individualized care aligns with this vision. We are dedicated to fostering an environment where every individual's needs are met with empathy and respect, recognizing that not all disabilities are seen. Today we celebrate Global Accessibility Awareness Day and recognize the importance of digital access and inclusion for people with disabilities worldwide. As Samyuktha Neeraja, MPH, CAE, a dedicated advocate for people with disabilities, says: “Accessibility is not just the removal of physical barriers. Accessibility is also digital…making our digital content more accessible and inclusive.” #GlobalAccessibilityAwarenessDay

Today is the International Day of Persons With Disabilities. And this year's theme — amplifying the leadership of people with disabilities for an inclusive, sustainable future — is about leadership and participation at all levels. Here's one way our movement can do more to include the voices of people with disabilities: Use the BCFED Accessible Events Guide! Prepared by the Federation's Accessibility Workers Caucus, this short guide will help you anticipate, plan for and meet your participants' diverse accessibility needs at your next event. And the larger lesson: All kinds of events and decision-making processes — including our own — still have barriers that keep many people from participating. And often those barriers are invisible to organizers. The more we can do to see those barriers and break them down, the better a job we'll do at representing all of our members. To the BCFED Accessibility Workers Caucus, thanks for your leadership in creating this great new resource! Find it at https://lnkd.in/ghgVYqq3. #BCLab #IDPD2024 #idpd

The Inaccessibility Cycle perpetuates exclusion for individuals with disabilities. It starts with barriers that prevent participation, leading to invisibility in public spaces. This invisibility reinforces the perception that disabled people are outliers, reducing the perceived need to accommodate them, which in turn maintains inaccessibility. This cycle hinders employment, education, and social inclusion. Graphic @Pacingpixie

For the regional development business, the net increase in the number of people with disabilities accepted shows how many more were accommodated over the year. As shown in the graph on the left of the slide, we fell short by 11 people compared to the plan, but there was about a 15% increase from the previous fiscal year. The total number of people accepted was 1,152 at the end of the previous fiscal year, an increase of about 30% over the year.

🌍 International Day of Persons with Disabilities✨ A Call to Empower Youth with Disabilities Today, we reflect on a critical truth: disability is not inability. Yet, too many young people with disabilities face barriers that limit their access to education, employment, and opportunities to thrive. The voices of youth with disabilities must be amplified. Their talents, dreams, and potential are vital to building inclusive societies. It's not about "helping" them—it's about breaking down barriers so they can fully participate and lead. Let us challenge the norms that exclude, advocate for policies that include, and create environments that empower. This is a call to action: 💡 To governments—prioritize accessible education and equal opportunities. 🤝 To communities—embrace and celebrate diversity in every form. 🎓 To youth—stand in solidarity, supporting peers with disabilities to rise and lead. #InternationalDayOfPersonsWithDisabilities #InclusionMatters #YouthEmpowerment #BreakingBarriers
