Read the article at Recharge News, “Principle Power and Aker among winners in US Energy Department phase two floating wind prize,” by Tim Ferry—May 16, 2024. “Floating wind technology firm Principle Power and partner Aker Solutions joined four other winners of the US Department of Energy (DoE)'s phase two floating offshore wind readiness (Flowin) prize announced Wednesday. The Flowin prize is aimed at spearheading technology development and industrialisation of the evolving clean power source to meet President Joe Biden's administration's Floating Wind Shot target of 15GW of capacity and rapid cost declines of 70% by 2035. Principle Power-Aker joint venture (JV)'s fourth generation WindFloat triangular platform is already commercially deployed in three projects in Portugal and Scotland totalling 75MW. Operational projects enabled the JV ‘to extract highly valuable feedback from the supply chain to better enable project successes on the first wave of US West Coast projects,’ said Seth Price, vice president of technology & innovation for Principle Power. The US has five active floating wind leases under development off California… ‘The innovative concepts produced by the winners of this phase will help make the nation’s offshore wind goals a reality,’ said Eric Lantz, director of DoE’s Wind Energy Technologies Office…” Read the full story below and at this link. https://lnkd.in/gfa3jy8j #offshorewind #floatingwind #cleanenergy #renewables #climate #offshorewindca #pacificoffshorewindsummit

With the capacity of floating wind projects in the pipeline expected to be 244GW globally, it's clear that the sector will be a major contribution to the future energy mix. In fact, 10% of this pipeline could be generated by floating wind turbines in Scotland - with 24.5GW from projects planned in the ScotWind and the Innovation and Targeted Oil & Gas (INTOG) leasing rounds. While a scale-up over the next couple of decades will require solutions to multiple challenges in a relatively short time, this also presents many opportunities, and Scotland already has a head start. Offshore Update: Equinor, Ørsted Sign New Empire Wind 1, Sunrise Wind Contracts with New York State The weighted average all-in development cost of the two awarded offshore wind projects over the life of the contracts is USD 150.15/MWh (approx. EUR 138/MWh). The 810 MW Empire Wind 1 is already moving towards the construction phase as Equinor received final approval. Ørsted's Sunrise Wind has 924 MW. This value of EUR 138/MWh is higher than EUR 86.45 per MWh, value that the consortium between Belgium-based Elicio and BayWa r.e. has won the AO5 tender in France to develop and operate the country's first floating offshore wind farm, the 250 MW Pennavel project. On the other hand in this fourth solicitation by NYSERDA only european companies have won the tender... US companies are not winning any in their own soil, I mean sea... It's the final day of UK Wind Energy Week and for today's theme of 'innovation', we're shining a spotlight on our Gwynt Glas floating offshore wind farm project. Gwynt Glas is a joint venture between EDF Renewables UK, ESB and Reventus Power – supported by DP Energy Group's Pembrokeshire based team, for their local knowledge and expertise – which could power up to one million homes with clean energy. What makes Gwynt Glas so innovative is that it will be built using floating offshore wind technology, which means the wind farm can be built in deeper waters than traditional offshore wind farms. We're hugely excited by the potential this technology offers to acclerate the UK's path to net zero and bring investment, jobs and skills into the Celtic Sea region. The thirteenth Windenergy trend (WEtix) report has just been released, highlighting significant positive shifts in the onshore and offshore European wind markets. Key findings: - The onshore and offshore wind markets in Germany and the EU are viewed more positively than in previous surveys, reflecting a significant improvement in mood. - The expected global average rated output of new offshore turbines by 2030 has increased from 18 MW to 19 MW, with several prototypes rated around 22 MW. However, the report also highlights ongoing challenges for wind energy development, including permitting procedures and slow grid expansion, with these issues being more pronounced in the onshore segment. CAPEX and technology challenges are also significant hurdles, especially in the offshore segment. Taking this opportunity, we are excited to announce that we will be showcasing our comprehensive service portfolio for wind projects at @WindEnergy Hamburg. Our teams at Barlovento Applus+, Enertis Applus+ and Applus+ will be pleased to meet you at our booth A4.115. #WindEnergy #RenewableEnergy #Onshore #Offshore #ApplusRenewables #Sustainability Source: https://lnkd.in/d6Rbbtec
