LEADERS from various international #maritime administrations agree that Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (𝐒𝐓𝐂𝐖)-𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐝 with a focus on skills applicable only to actual seafaring tasks. "We should modernize the skills and competencies under the #STCW training. Obsolete competencies that are no longer used onboard should be removed such as celestial navigation and flag signals. We are responsible [for their training] and should impart to them the right kind of skills to succeed in this profession. These should be skill-based and more applicable to the real-world situation on #ships," Capt. Mahyar Jokhi, gas manager of INTERTANKO, said, adding that too much training puts a lot of pressure on #seafarers.

What is STCW? STCW stands for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers. This standard was adopted by the International Conference on Training and Certification of Seafarers and entered into force in 1984, 40 years ago. It was the first standard to establish basic requirements on training, certification and watchkeeping for seafarers on an international level. Previously the standards were established by individual governments, usually without reference to practices in other countries. As a result, standards and procedures varied widely, even though shipping is a hugely international industry. We offer a wide range of STCW courses, including initial and refresher training – some certificates need renewing after five years to maintain competence. All our STCW provision is accredited by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and we are audited regularly to ensure compliance. Outstanding chance to revisit flight safety fundamentals and regulatory requirements! #vale #corporateaviation #aviation #executiveaviation
Our in-person training ‘Managing Contracted Aviation Risk’ in #Calgary is on today and tomorrow. Besides the comprehensive training content delivered by Yesid Suarez, the attendees also engaged in discussions about the growing pilot shortage. Many BARS Program Member Organizations require #Aircraft and #RPAS Operators to perform missions with highly specialized profiles. A shortage of well-trained, qualified, and proficient #pilots is thus becoming an increasing concern. A big thank you to Worley Canada for hosting this MCAR training! We look forward to many more discussions tomorrow and in the coming days at our Technical Advisory Committee Meeting. #MCAR #TAC #AviationSafety #SafetyTraining #PilotShortage

Maneuvering heavy vehicles in busy project sites can be challenging, which is why having trained, capable flagmen is crucial to ensuring traffic safety and minimizing accidents. A flagman is a worker who directs and controls traffic by providing accurate direction to drivers at locations where permanent signage is missing or does not sufficiently control the road. Velosi Flagman Training course is designed to equip participants with a comprehensive set of common traffic signals, provide guidance on their practical applications in real life circumstances, and teach them methods for resolving difficult maneuvering scenarios. Tugs have an important role to play in port and harbour operations and are extremely powerful vessels used to assist the movement and manoeuvring of other vessels. Following the tragic girting and capsize of the tug Biter, the MAIB have made recommendations for Competent and Statutory Harbour Authorities (“CHA”) to implement the following: 1. Ensure that all tugs working within a CHA/SHA’s jurisdiction are fitted with automatic recognition systems so that their movements can be recognised. 2. Ensure there is better allocation of tugs so that they are capable of doing the job at hand. 3. Encourage pilot / tug information exchanges prior to and during manoeuvring so that there is common understanding as to how arrivals and departures are handled. SHAs are responsible for managing marine activities within their waters and jurisdiction. Under the Pilotage Act 1987 a CHA is required to authorise persons to act as pilots and to ensure that they have the necessary skill and experience for the role as well as determine which pilotage services should be offered within the port or harbour. The MAIB found that there was a breakdown in communication between the Master/Pilot and the Master of tug Biter, which resulted in the tugs manoeuvring being unexpected and not as planned. It is hoped that the recommendations above will prevent this situation arising again and protect against potential loss of lives. #LAMarine #ports #harbours #regulations #maritimelaw #harbourauthorities #tugs
