On the path to a #greeneconomy, one of the key challenges for Australia is decommissioning. #Decommissioning refers to the safe deconstruction and removal of end-of-life infrastructure (such as oil rigs or power plants). Meanwhile #abandonment refers to the process of retiring them and preparing the site for repurposing or rehabilitation. Tellus is partnering with organisations as they transition through the crucial processes of decommissioning and abandonment (D&A). Our facility at Sandy Ridge is Australia’s only operational hazardous waste facility licensed to accept the challenging wastes from offshore decommissioning, such as naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM), mercury and other hazardous contaminants. As a result, Tellus plays a pivotal role in managing the hazardous materials that emerge during D&A by safely and permanently isolating hazardous materials and exploring recycling potential. An example of this is our partnership with @entX to turn NORM into medicine to fight cancer. Which is why Tellus is proud to be an official sponsor of the D&A AUS 2024 conference, from 19-21 June at The Crown Perth. The conference will be a gathering of key industry participants, including government representatives, regulators, operators, and service providers, to discuss and advance D&A strategies. Team Tellus will be at our booth over all three days - come chat to us about handling, disposing and removing the liability of hazardous materials associated with D&A. Don't miss our CEO Nate Smith's presentation on 20 June, diving into Sandy Ridge's unique recycling and circular solutions research capabilities. Interested in attending? BSEE estimates platform decommissioning cost in the US Gulf of Mexico in water depth 122-250 meters at $4.8 million, about twice as expensive as removals in the 61-122 m water depth range. For platforms residing in 250-500 m water depth, cost estimates range from $10-80 million.

As we continue to navigate the complex landscape of climate change today, it’s important to look back and acknowledge the historical narratives that have shaped our environmental discourse. One striking example is the campaign run by Chevron in the 1990s, which had significant and lasting repercussions for climate awareness and action. During that time, Chevron, like many other fossil fuel companies, invested heavily in a public relations campaign aimed at portraying themselves as environmentally responsible and committed to sustainability. However, this campaign also had a more insidious side—rather than fostering genuine dialogue about climate change and its impacts, it often served to sow doubt and confusion among the public. Here are a few key negative impacts of the Chevron campaign: 1. Misinformation and Doubt: The campaign contributed to the spread of misinformation about the science of climate change, downplaying its urgency and the role of fossil fuels in global warming. This sowed skepticism and delayed necessary action for years. 2. Influence on Policy: By positioning themselves as climate-savvy, these companies sought to influence policymakers, diverting attention from the urgent need for regulation and systemic change in our energy systems. Public Perception: The portrayal of fossil fuel companies as stewards of responsible environmental practices hindered public understanding of the true costs of fossil fuel consumption and obstructed grassroots movements advocating for renewable energy and sustainable practices. 3. Environmental Justice: The narrative crafted by such campaigns often overlooked the disproportionate impacts of climate change on marginalized communities, sidelining those who are most affected while protecting corporate interests. As professionals invested in sustainable development and climate action, it is crucial that we learn from this history. We must commit to transparency, advocate for genuine solutions, and ensure that our communication prioritizes facts over corporate narratives. Let’s work together to build a future that truly prioritizes our planet and its people. 🌿 #ClimateAction #Sustainability #EnvironmentalJustice #HistoryMatters #ClimateChangeAwareness

Rigs to Reefs: From Controversy to Consensus on Decommissioning California's Offshore Oil Platforms 2024 SDP 30th Annual Conference New to DQ Track - April 16, 2024 Speaker: Max Henrion (Lumina Decision Systems) Abstract: Since the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, anything about offshore oil is controversial in California, even what to do with defunct oil platforms. I'll describe how a multidisciplinary team developed an interactive decision analysis model using a multi-attribute value function that enabled conflicting stakeholders to understand the options and arrive at agreement about a solution. This project won the Decision Analysis Practice Award in 2014. #SDG

Curious about what we do? 🤔 Check out the video below! Between July and November 2024, our team successfully delivered some of the key asset renewal projects within the Central Queensland Coal Network (CQCN), which helps to ensure the railway network remains safe and reliable for our customers in each coal system. The success of these high risk projects was only made possible through close collaboration between various teams within Aurizon as well as external contractors such as BC Project Industries, Hillery Group and Schwarz. A big thank you goes out to everyone who played a role in these asset renewal projects! 👏👏

Sustainable Decommissioning at the Port of Ashburton In 2021, Base Marine proudly partnered with Eni and McDermott International, Ltd to bring two substantial 250-tonne segments from a detachable single-point mooring buoy in the Woolybutt field back to shore. These structures, after serving offshore for over 30 years, were carefully managed with one goal in mind: environmentally responsible disposal and recycling. Each segment was safely transported using a Base-supplied 13-line trailer to our secure laydown area, where they were expertly placed on engineered stands. From there, we engaged C.D. Dodd to handle the steel’s scrapping and recycling. Thanks to our stringent decommissioning and waste management plans, all materials will be recycled, bringing these structures full circle in an environmentally friendly manner. This successful collaboration not only highlights Base’s role as the most experienced landside decommissioning partner in the Onslow region but also reinforces our dedication to sustainability, safety, and strategic partnerships in decommissioning. Paving the way forward in environmentally responsible marine operations—reliability you can base on. #BaseMarine #WoolybuttDecommissioning #SustainableDecommissioning #ENI #McDermott #CDDodd #Recycling #PortOfAshburton #WasteManagement #EnvironmentalCommitment #NorthWestWA #MarineLogistics #ResponsibleDecommissioning #SustainabilityInAction https://lnkd.in/dKSnan5q
