Waste Walks are a simple, but effective process to identify obstacles and opportunities on a project that are impacting productivity. This is something that a good general superintendent or area superintendent who has responsibility over a number of projects, should do every week when he shows up to visit a job site, before jumping into solving the fires of the day. Proactively look for and ask about how the following six things are either supporting or impacting productivity. Once identified, make a change to improve performance. 1. Materials 2. Tools 3. Equipment 4. People and Crew Size 5. Information 6. Job Site Logistics, Layout and Housekeeping Identifying and finding ways to improve productivity and performance on a job site should be job #1 for a general superintendent! Instead, most of them spend their day driving around putting out fires and shuffling people around. BTW, does anyone want guess what job #2 should be for them?
