On 21 October 2024, Water Europe organised a major event in Brussels, aimed at raising awareness and fostering dialogue around the creation of the new EIT Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) dedicated to the water, marine and maritime sectors. This event is aligned with and supports the European Commission’s 2024 EIT Water Call awareness campaign, which highlights Water Europe’s commitment to support innovation and sustainability in these ecosystems to achieve a global Water-Smart Society. With a shared mission to address water sustainability, resilience and security challenges – taking into account the impacts of climate change on water ecosystems – this event brought together leaders from research, business, education and key institutions of the European Commission to debate the future Water KIC. During this event, I gave a presentation on the Floating Farm’s activities as a Living Lab in the “Energy-Water-Food” value chain and launched a call for collaboration in a KIC on innovative solutions and strategic approaches. 🌎 Mapping land use support systems to reach net zero LUC is excited to share our latest study for ClimateXChange. We’ve worked with Scotland's #ClimateChange centre of expertise to map land use support systems. The Scottish Government’s ambitions to reach #NetZero by 2045 require transforming land use and reducing #GreenhouseGasEmissions. Our research aims to understand the factors that influence engagement with land use transformation support systems, to guide policy and speed up the pace of change. Through interviews and a literature review, we wanted to understand how stakeholders make decisions and access funding. We established how rural land managers interact with systems and services and the barriers they encounter. Key findings: 📖 The public sector grant system is logical but has a high administrative burden. 🤝 Trust in the source of advice is key for land managers’ decisions. 🙇♀️ The breadth of support sources is confusing for some. Last chance to register for the European Water Tech Accelerator’s Green Week Partner Event workshop “How to build a Water Positive Economy?”. It will be held this coming Thursday 30 May online from 2pm to 4.30pm CET. The Green Week is the annual European Commission’s Directorate General for Environment event to raise awareness and discuss environmental policies. This year’s theme is “Towards a Water Resilient Europe”. Our event will focus on how to build a Water Positive Economy in Europe, and more specifically, how to develop, apply and deploy water tech to reach water resilience, whilst ensuring economic growth, driving profitability and creating jobs. We would like to discuss how the innovative water tech ecosystem can be a driver for the economy, though deploying them to a scale that is significant enough to: -       Become a key sector for driving the European economy -       Become attractive enough to the industry and the engineering sector, to consider the innovations as an investment rather than as a cost. The key expected outcome of the workshop: at the end of the workshop, 10 recommendations aiming at facilitating the deployment of innovations in Europe will have been drafted.
