Group photo with Srujana Guggilla and Venkatesh Veginati - Project 4 - "Measuring the Quantitative Impact of Patient Choice as an Empirical Validation of Values-Based Practice." They did a great job with the Master's Capstone project (ASDS 6306) but we forgot to take the group photo after their presentation last month. The work is ongoing and we are preparing for publication. Xinlei Wang #innovation #statistics #patientchoice #vbp #valuesbasedpractice

Our paper Babe:Enhancing Fairness via Estimation of Explaining Variables is on its way to #ACMFAccT'24 ! It took quite a while to convince the reviewers! Possibly, because we take a different path, than simply equalizing the outcome for the sensitive populations. We are addressing the problem of biased “ground truth” labels, or the “explaining variable” which is noisy because of historical bias. For example, the priority healthcare decisions based on health spending are discriminative to the pour populations, which spend less even though their health condition is worse. The question is, how much is it worse and how much more priority they should get? The idea of the paper is to combine the existing prior knowledge from scientific studies with the observational data. We also propose a method to account for the distribution differences between the observational and experimental populations. I believe the idea of combining data driven approach with prior scientific knowledge can lead to having the best of the two worlds and is applicable in many areas of ML. Someone asked us “If you could compare a clinical data manager to an animal, which one would it be?”…… Constantly adapting and responding to an ever changing environment is something that the clinical data management function has done so well for the last few decades. So, our answer to this question was a chameleon. The speed at which the function adapts and changes is similar to how a chameleon adapts to its natural environment. That is what makes the clinical data management function so special. The ACDM: Association for Clinical Data Management is a global membership association that has been leading the way in clinical data management since 1987. Nice piece of thought leadership by John who is our President of Consulting @ Fortrea and a good friend. Systems thinking is an approach to problem-solving that emphasizes understanding the interconnectedness of all components in a system. This article delves into how applying this framework to clinical trial design enables the creation and application of new models that will improve experiences and outcomes.

The spring SMART IRB Study Team Advisory Meeting (STEAM) is on April 22nd at 10 AM EDT via Zoom. We established the SMART IRB Study Team Advisory Meeting to obtain input from investigators and study teams on the best ways to navigate single IRB review arrangements for their studies. Goals 1.Identify ways to better engage study teams in the sIRB process. 2.Improve dissemination and utilization of current SMART IRB research team resources. 3.Learn what works well with the process for study teams and areas that present challenges. If you are interested in attending the spring meeting or would like more information on STEAM, please message me. Mike #IRB, #SMART_IRB, #ACRP, #SOCRA

#MSLs are under pressure to get better insights. But understanding what makes an insight good is tricky! What is good at one time may not be good at another time. Sometimes learning from negative examples can help better understand what good looks like. Richard Swank, Ph.D. and I discuss how to turn "bad" #msl insights into good ones in this Strategy Hack.
