What’s Your Holiday “No”? Here’s Mine. 🙅♀️ I’ve always been the social type. Invite me to a party, game night, or gathering, and I’m there! I love connecting with people and having fun. But here’s the thing: as much fun as those events are, I’d always come home drained. Tired. Wiped out. When it came to the Christmas season, I knew I didn’t want that same feeling creeping into my holiday break. So, years ago—back when I first got married (wow, time flies!)—I had a conversation with my hubby about my big holiday “No.” I never wanted to travel for Christmas. Let me explain. Around the holidays, I usually get about a week off from work (paid, yay!), and I wanted to actually enjoy that time. Like, really enjoy it. No packing, no booking flights, no lugging gifts through airports. Just a simple, restful staycation. Most trips are exhausting, and honestly, who’s packing up all those Christmas gifts? In the US, it’s the Thanksgiving-to-New Year whirlwind. In Asia, Christmas leads into the Chinese New Year festivities. So, if you’re balancing multiple time zones or global teams, it can feel like everyone’s gone at some point… just not at the same time. Why don’t I take off for Christmas or New Year? Every year, when the holidays roll around… I’m the guy holding the fort while my peers are off celebrating with their families. Let me take you behind the scenes. You see, for me, these holidays don’t carry the same personal significance. But for my colleagues, it’s everything. So I ask myself: If I can make it easier for them to be there for those moments, why wouldn’t I? That’s why I volunteer to take the shifts. No hesitation. No second thoughts. And while I’m technically “working,” it doesn’t feel like a sacrifice. In a way, I am celebrating. I celebrate the smiles of my colleagues, knowing that they are with their loved ones. I celebrate the fact that I can help someone else rest while I step up. We all come from different walks of life… But, when we look out for each other, that’s the real celebration.
