In this video I share on how we can deal with the culture of shame in Africa. It was inspired by Bovi Ugboma’s (a popular Nigerian comedian) session at the Daystar Excellence in Leadership Conference in 2023. You can watch Bovi's session using this link (https://lnkd.in/eJuzremx). If I try to summarize what he said in his speech I would say, we live in a society where people are looking for ways to shame others or trying to avoid being shamed. This tendency to shame or be shamed is costing us the authenticity that adds colour to our lives and society. We are raising a generation that have to ‘fake it until they make it’. We are playing around a keg of gunpowder filled with a sense of low self esteem and a lack of confidence. There’s an identity crisis brewing amongst young Africans; we need to act fast and take bold actions in preserving our identities and cultural heritage. Unity for a Purpose: Embracing African Unity on AU Day. ( #Part2 ) - by Mrs. Erinn Ransom-Ofori Collaborative Political and Social Efforts To achieve true unity, we must also focus on collaborative political and social efforts. This includes strengthening regional economic integration and cooperation through organizations such as the African Union and regional economic communities. Encouraging people-to-people interactions and cultural exchange programs can promote cross-border understanding and unity. Investing in education and creating a shared African identity that transcends national boundaries is essential for fostering long-term unity. Reflecting on Our Role in African Unity I stand by the belief that Africa's potential is infinite. African Unity Day is a day to stir up our will and commitment. To all past and present fellows of the Central Leadership Program (CLP), I challenge you to spend some time today reflecting in your Leadership Learning Journals on how greater African unity can benefit the pillar of society that most interests you, and how you can promote, model, and lead African unity towards the Africa we envision. Let us take inspiration from Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah: "It is in our hands to join our strength, taking sustenance from our diversity, honoring our rich and varied traditions and culture but acting together for the protection and benefit of us all." The term "Ubuntu" comes from the Nguni languages, which include Zulu, Xhosa, and Ndebele. In Zulu, it is often expressed as "Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu," which translates to "A person is a person through other persons Ubuntu is a Nguni Bantu term from Southern Africa that means "humanity" or "I am because we are." It embodies a sense of community, interconnectedness, and mutual caring for all. The concept emphasizes that a person's humanity is intrinsically linked to the humanity of others, promoting compassion, mutual support, and collective well-being. Ubuntu has influenced various aspects of African philosophy and is often associated with the thoughts of notable African leaders and thinkers. It has been popularized globally through the work of figures like Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, who have highlighted Ubuntu's relevance in promoting social justice, reconciliation, and peace. In the T4L program, we believe that true leadership is rooted in these principles. By embracing Ubuntu, our leaders learn to foster collaboration, respect diversity, and drive collective growth. This holistic approach cultivates leaders who are not only effective in their roles but also inspire and uplift those around them. 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝘀 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝘂𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 Nelson Mandela's leadership offers a profound lesson: true wisdom lies in recognizing the shades of grey, nuanced leadership! It involves: - Considering multiple perspectives - Acknowledging that issues are rarely black and white - Making decisions that balance competing interests - Being flexible and adaptable in approach Mandela's approach during South Africa's transition from apartheid to democracy showcases the power of nuanced thinking: • Challenge: Reconciling a deeply divided nation • Approach: Pragmatism over rigid ideology • Result: A foundation for a unified South Africa Mandela understood that perfect justice might hinder perfect peace. He chose a path that, while imperfect, offered the best chance for a stable future. Remember: The most effective solutions often lie not in extremes, but in the thoughtful navigation of the space between. #LeadershipLessons #NuancedThinking #NelsonMandela #Bangladesh

Can you imagine the current U.S. land grant university system and the Cooperative Extension Services (CES) was conceived in 1862? The land grant institutions play a pivotal role in education, research, and community development through three key pillars: teaching, research, and extension services. Getting agriculture, and the food security question right has cemented the position of the U.S. as one of the greatest countries in the world. It took visionary leadership, a long-term mindset, and commitment to get the food question right. As young African leaders, can we be counted as the people who will transform our countries? Can we be the people who think long-term and plant trees we might not sit under their shade? Can we reposition Africa for economic take-off? Yes, we can! But only through visionary leadership, commitment, and thirst for change.

The marks we leave behind are often recognised for their enduring influence on lives and the ability to inspire others long after we're gone. However, many individuals move through life, leaving only fleeting impressions that have little lasting effect on future generations. The actual impact is not solely a result of the number of our actions but rather the depth of the legacy we leave behind. Consider a South Africa led by individuals whose vision, integrity, and compassion resonate across generations—leaders who inspire a legacy of pride, progress, and unity. We should strive for this type of leadership that leaves a lasting imprint and paves the way for a brighter future. Despite the mistaken belief that their actions and legacies are insignificant, many individuals struggle with this notion. Each of us has a purpose in life's journey, and our actions today, regardless of their scale, will be remembered as a testament to our influence on society. These collective impacts define a nation’s authentic influence. It's important to note that we don’t all need to be leaders to make a difference.
