OHLA USA's Paving Prowess! Earlier this week, representatives of the Florida Department of Transportation and Asphalt Contractors Association of Florida recognized OHLA USA for its exceptional proficiency in asphalt manufacturing and placement with the Smoothest Pavement Award on two highway projects. The awards are designed to recognize companies that go beyond what is required to ensure the quality of asphalt not only meets but exceeds department standards for pavement smoothness. Yonathan Benarroch, OHLA USA’s Vice President, and Wade Knowlton, one of OHLA's Asphalt General Superintendents, accepted the awards on behalf of our asphalt plant staff and the two project teams who worked diligently on both the Florida Turnpike Resurfacing project – 21.3 Lane Miles of Paving in Palm Beach County and State Road 9, I-95 – 10.1 Lane Miles of Paving in St. Lucie County. Congratulations to the entire team with special recognition to OHLA USA's asphalt plant staff who always create a superior product for our Florida highways! #OHLAUSA #CommunityAsphalt #Paving #Asphalt #Pavetheway #AwardWinningAsphalt #AwardWinningPaving #WeareOHLA #WeBuildExcellence

What Was That Dark, Magic-Like Material Laura Ingalls Wilder Saw? Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the beloved book "Little House on the Prairie," tells of a wagon journey with her parents in 1894 that took them through Topeka: "In the very midst of the city, the ground was covered by some dark stuff that silenced all the wheels and muffled the sound of hoofs. It was like tar, but Papa was sure it was not tar, and it was something like rubber, but it could not be rubber because rubber cost too much. We saw ladies all in silks and carrying ruffled parasols, walking with their escorts across the street. Their heels dented the street, and while we watched, these dents slowly filled up and smoothed themselves out. It was as if that stuff were alive. It was like magic." Today, asphalt covers more than 94 percent of the paved roads in the United States. (Source: History of Asphalt National Asphalt Pavement Association). Brand new industrial construction in Clay County, Florida! A large asphalt shingle manufacturing facility going up is said to provide up to 140 jobs for the community. While this is 1 of 8 of these facilities, it's the first in Florida and will be interesting to see the additional impact on North American operations. https://lnkd.in/eQVB9BBr

More government kickbacks? I-75 in Northern Oakland county is being repaved. They previously put asphalt over concrete slabs, which is why the asphalt cracks every 15 feet in strait lines over the concrete joints and greatly shortens the life of the road. It is (should be) known to all civil engineers to only put asphalt over crushed limestone or crushed concrete so it can "float" as the ground freezes and thaws. As I drive by the I-75 construction, they have ground out the asphalt down to the old concrete slabs and are again putting the asphalt over the old concrete. The only feasible explanation is kickbacks to the government employees to "allow" this very improper method of paving in order to get the work again in not very many years when the road prematurely fails. #kickbacks #corruptmichigan #mdot #fixthedamnroads

Another Asphalt-Rubber Cape Seal success story. This time in Fort Bragg, CA. Most of Fort Bragg's streets in their August 2008 Asphalt-Rubber Cape Seal project had alligator cracks that were in the 1/2" to 3/4" inch wide range (a bit wider than Asphalt-Rubber Chip and Cape Seals' 3/8" to 1/2" "sweet spot). Nonetheless, 16-years later and counting in July of 2024 90% of the streets in the project are still performing well and will get even more years of service. An Asphalt-Rubber Chip Seal is priced at about 1/4 the cost of a conventional hot mix overlay with minimal grinding. An Asphalt-Rubber Cape Seal is priced at about 1/3 the cost of a conventional hot mix overlay with minimal grinding. The right product at the right time is key to making your maintenance dollars go as far as they can. There are so, so many roads, especially residential low volume roads that don't need overlays, where an Asphalt-Rubber Chip or Cape Seal Strategy makes great sense, and this strategy frees up $$$ for other projects where a more robust solution (overlay / reconstruction) might be needed. Public Works agencies have a fixed bucket of road maintenance and construction money $$$ to use each year. Use it wisely and you can get to more roads each and every year and in doing so, raise your City or County PCI scores in the process...
