Catalyzing Innovation Through Education: A Call to Action In my corporate career at Shell, especially during the decade I spent in Energy Transition, I have attended many meetings with customers, conferences, congresses, and forums. I have also been part of strategies and scenarios. The uniting fabric of all these experiences is #innovation. We see innovation as the key to solving the climate change crisis. But innovation does not come by itself. It needs to be sparked, ignited, and directed towards the real topics. And that is where #education comes into the picture. We all need education to understand the evolving space of technology, market mechanisms, policies, and regulations. High-quality education costs time and money. And we are short on both. Therefore, I decided to accelerate (at my core, I am a specialist in catalysis, the chemical art of making processes happen or accelerating them). But no catalytic conversion works sufficiently without enough people. I therefore call you to action by joining those people who have already subscribed. Today at the World Energy Congress #WEC2024 I had the honor to actively engage in a CEO roundtable followed by a panel discussion with the stimulating title “Gridlock: No Transmission, no Transition”. The electric grid is the backbone of modern energy societies. We only realise how important it is when the load gets too much. Multi-directional, integrated and smart grids with dynamic storage are expected to form the new flexible backbone for climate resilience development. What got us here, won't get us there. Connective leadership in energy transition requires identifying tipping points for whole system change and intervening in action learning to enhance both hard and soft system capabilities. Amidst the backdrop of unstable global geopolitics, the energy outlook remains uncertain. Managing energy transitions is a complex coordination challenge. In a fast-paced world of innovation and change, technological solutions are in abundance. Yet, the key to orderly, inclusive, and just energy transitions is to use many new ways to align diverse needs and interests at speed and for impact at scale. Therefore we need 3️⃣ things! A vision, a concrete plan and cooperation globally throughout the value chain is the way grow exponential and not linear. Examples are the 2GW program, LionLink and our common vision on how to make optimal use of the North Sea within NSEC. Stick to the vision together and put execution first is my call today. Major breakthroughs can succeed if you know where you want to go. If you roll up your sleeves together to do so. This is the time for radical commitment to honest and swift implementation of previously set goals. This is the time for common together finding right middle ground between utopia and reality, between ambition and implementation, between striving for change and acknowledging unruly reality, and between uncertainty and determination.
