Most people watching and listening to the altered Kamala Harris video would (hopefully) understand that it's not authentic. It does prompt us to wonder if we should be allowed to use these generative AI tools to replicate and mimic a presidential candidate's voice so close to an election. And should there be a clear label on AI-generated videos, images, and audio. Should we be using Content Credentials and allowing users to see how the piece of content was made and altered? This becomes especially important in cases where there is clear intent to manipulate and mislead. Watch full exchange: https://lnkd.in/eUrUgYgP

Indeed, this insight about influence campaigns extends all the way back to the Biblical times, when ancient Israel found itself in cycles of reward and punishment due to its leaders' decisions to cyclically obey and stray away from God's commands. In a more contemporary context, voters or citizens in most societies tend to reward lawmakers who stay true to their principles in their advocacy for causes in the national interest. On the other hand, voters or citizens in most socities tend to distrust, become apathetic to, or become more polarized when their lawmakers seem to even appear to be subjected to influence from foreign governments. The lawmakers then find it difficult to recover that trust from their constituency; and, in a sense, such is the conundrum that most democracies are in today.

Love this throwback into the history of influence campaigns! "Misinformation didn't begin with the rise of AI and online media. Coming to 2025 Since 2021 we have used our proprietary semantic analyser (curated AI engine) to generate our virtues fingerprint of the personas of current Australian politicians. While these snapshots reflect only the public faces of our elected officials, they are incredibly useful as those personas are what the voting public sees too. In the new year, an updated version will be complied for use of clients. #virtues #persona #politics

"Politics and Artificial intelligence", sounds like the opening line in a comedy routine, but it's no joke. (AI) is the latest in a series of technological advancements that are being used to influence campaigns and elections. With AI’s ability to create realistic images, videos, and voices quickly, both campaigns and state policymakers are taking action. While attempts to manipulate media for electoral influence are not new, some states have longstanding criminal impersonation laws that could apply to AI-generated impersonations. As AI technology expands, look for states to implement more regulatory guard rails to prevent AI fraud, both in the business and political arenas. #lawyers #politics #AI #elections #statelegislation #legislators #regulations #electionlaw https://lnkd.in/eFJ9TrWH

The 2024 global election 'super-cycle' saw AI's growing role in democracy, impacting 3.7 billion voters across 72 countries. While fears of AI-driven #misinformation and deepfakes were prominent, their disruptive effects were less significant than expected. Positive uses included AI-powered translation, voter engagement through chatbots, and campaign tools for fundraising and strategy, with candidates like India’s PM Modi and various U.S. contenders leveraging these technologies. Challenges like AI-generated propaganda and ineffective enforcement of political-use bans remain, but #AI also helped counter #disinformation and enhance content moderation. https://lnkd.in/gD-iWqbm #LearnThenLike #StudyThenShare #PonderThenPost

If anything is to take Al off the front pages, it's the #USElection. But as we near the finish line, it's clear that both Presidential candidates have been sleeping on Al. While deepfakes and bots have been popular topics during the campaign, real policy around the adoption and uptake of Al has been minimal at best. As Matteo Wong puts it in his piece in today's The Australian Financial Review, "Widespread Al policy is coming, and the next president may well steer its direction for years to come." This will no doubt have flow on effects in other jurisdictions, like Australia, where we must align with global policy is an interconnected economy. #AI #artificialintelligence #auspol #election #politics https://lnkd.in/gzfCQRY4

Navigating the Line: Balancing Social Responsibility and Freedom of Speech Yesterday, I had the honor of being on a panel for a CLE Webinar entitled Navigating the Line: Balancing Social Responsibility and Freedom of Speech. While many topics were discussed, the most memorable discussions were on what the future of social media looks like. There was some disagreement over the government's role in regulating social media, but there was consensus that lawmakers may not fully understand the technology, its social impact, or its psychological impact. This is a serious issue that I believe will only worsen. Comparing social media to op-eds and newspapers reveals significant differences. Switching from the New York Times to the Wall Street Journal doesn't mean losing my social footprint, content investment, or network. The switching costs are much higher for social media users. Editors select op-eds, not algorithms, and newspapers have finite content, whereas social media is endless. Engagement metrics drive psychological needs that newspapers do not. We need more discussions as AI, bots, foreign actors, political, and terrorist organizations leverage social media for their own goals. For further reading, I recommend "LikeWar: The Weaponization of Social Media" (2018), which provides valuable insights into these issues. https://lnkd.in/egdaRKyz It was a great discussion, and I look forward to many more as we navigate these complex challenges. I am certainly inspired to write a couple new blog posts and LinkedIn Articles on the topic. #CLEPanel #SocialResponsibility #FreedomOfSpeech #SocialMediaRegulation #LegalInsights #AI #DigitalEthics #AbsoluteMarketingSolutions
