Glad to see my brief article on 'Enhancing Synergies between Peacebuilding and Human Rights in Africa' published today by ACCORD's #ConflictTrends. In the article, I argued that despite the intrinsic relationship between #Peacebuilding and #HumanRights, commensurate attention has not been given yet to mainstreaming this relationship into the policy making & interventions of the AU. Therefore, I call for stronger complementarity between peacebuilding and human rights by: - Strengthening the AU's Peace and Security Council (PSC) prevention mandate and an effective Continental Early Warning System. - Improved and systematized collaborations between the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights and the PSC, including collaboration with Civil Society Organizations and; - Establishing robust accountability mechanism to combat impunity and deter relapse into conflicts. I hope this makes a modest contribution to the AU's Peace and Human Rights agenda discussions. Thanks to the #ConflictTrends team at the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD)

📌 NEW PUBLICATION: UN Peace Operations and Human Rights: A Thematic Study It was an absolute pleasure to work alongside brilliant co-authors from United Nations University Centre for Policy Research (UNU-CPR), Center for Civilians in Conflict, Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), SIPRI, Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) on this Effectiveness of Peace Operations Network (EPON) thematic study on the role of human rights in United Nations peace operations, led by the equally brilliant Charlie Hunt. A year of empirical research from 10 mission sites in the DRC, South Sudan, Mali, Afghanistan, Yemen and others explores how UN engagement with human rights enhances peace operation effectiveness, and how peace operations contribute to improved human rights outcomes. 📘 Full report: https://lnkd.in/eFjWW8x5 📙 Key Findings and Executive Summary: https://lnkd.in/eU_nAtZk Growing resistance to HR language in peace operation mandates, diminishing host state consent, and heightened political sensitivities pose increasing challenges to the UN’s prioritization of human rights. This report points to the value of human rights efforts in a range of UN field missions, and offers tangible recommendations for the UNSC, Secretariat, Member States, host governments and mission leadership on how to maximise that potential.

Nirmal Kumar Upreti is a Fellow of our 2023 Asia Peace Innovators Forum. He is the president of the Forum for Nation Building in Nepal, where he works on diverse areas such as human rights, migration, mediation access to justice, youth, development, and peace. 🕊️ When asked about his project Nirmal explained that it started when he observed that "people in most of the country have limited information or access to justice. Since people are limited in information on legal issues [and] they don’t have access to justice. If they don't have access to justice, how can we expect peace within the country and society? So, we have started this project and already reached 45,000 people on different legal issues.” Follow the link to learn how Nirmal Kumar Upreti is expanding access to justice, improving governance, and working towards peacebuilding in Nepal https://ow.ly/8ExU50QIL0M #SGSpeace #AsiaPeaceInnovatorsForum #AccessToJustice #Peacebuilding #NepalPeace #Governance #SocialJustice

United Nations Day, on 24 October, marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. In today's time of varied wars and political unrests in different countries across the world, it is more urgent for the UN to fulfill its promise and top other global organizations in delivering a peaceful and hopeful future that we want. This year will mark the intergovernmental organization, United Nations' 79th year since the foundation. There is no other global organization with the legitimacy, convening power and normative impact of the United Nations. The United Nations works to maintain peace and security across the world. The Technical Assistance Unit (TAU) - Support to the Criminal Justice Reform in Ethiopia Programme, funded by the European Union 🇪🇺 and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) International Services-led consortium with DCAF - Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance, works to empower citizens through education on fundamental rights. As we continue exploring human rights, let's reflect on Freedom of Assembly and Association. This right protects citizens' ability to gather peacefully and form groups. It ensures that: 🚶♀️ Citizens can come together freely as a community. 🤝 Individuals have the power to join unions advocating for better working conditions. 🔹 It allows citizens to mobilize, organize and work collectively to enact positive change. How have you leveraged this right to better your community? #EU GIZ Ethiopia and Djibouti #CriminalJusticeReform #Ethiopia #Justice4All #TechnicalAssistance #HumanRights #AccessToJustice #KnowYourRights #Equality #KnowYourRights #Assembly #Ethiopia

With the current failures in the international governance system, it may be overwhelmingly frustrating to for smaller organisations and committed individuals pursuing bigger mission of making the world a liveable place for everybody. The international frameworks seem dysfunctional. No respect for international human rights instruments and the institutions. Refugee camps, schools and hospitals have become objects of direct military attacks including persons occupying them. We have reached the moment where the humanitarian service providers themselves have lost their safety, protection and privileges, and have equally become helpless and direct target of attack. Universal moral and legal agreements broken and nullified if they conflict the interests of the powerful leagues. The few nations trusted with the veto power under the UNSC provisions duty and responsibility to take care of global security have become the global insecurity themselves. The United Nations is being degraded and disregarded by the very nations that created it. We have reached a point where we preach respect for fundamental rights for all citizens at home while away, we are actively practising necropolitics and necroeconomy. This imposes a huge frustration on individuals and civil society organisations committed to promoting humanity. For now, thinking about large scale goals in helping people and changing things can only lead to hopelessness and darkness. The best way now is to take on small and closely relatable daily act of kindness and reflect on those simple but tangible achievements. While the big question to all of us is “What shall we tell the young people tomorrow about what they are witnessing today?” What happened to the Geneva Convention? What about UDHR? International human rights and humanitarian laws? Child Rights Convention? What about protecting women and children? Relevance of ICJ, ICC, etc? The future of United Nations as a whole?

The draft South African National Peace Charter was introduced to the public by the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation and the Human Rights Institute of South Africa, at the Human Rights Festival hosted at the Constitution Hill in Johannesburg, drawing attention to the importance of human rights, Women, Peace and Security as well as peace for all in the country. The genesis of the charter can be traced back to the National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) 2020 – 2025. This comprehensive framework underscores the imperative for a Peace Charter in South Africa. With key government and stakeholder input, the National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security laid the groundwork for collaborative efforts towards achieving lasting peace in the nation. By actively engaging with the charter, individuals are encouraged to pledge their commitment to making South Africa a more peaceful society. The official launch of the Peace Charter will soon take place at a date to be announced.
