On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, HeartLine recognizes the strength of Native communities and the alarming fact that suicide rates among Native Americans are up to three times higher than other groups in the U.S. We all share a responsibility to listen, support, and stand by one another. There is strength in community. If you or someone you know needs help, remember the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7. Call or text 9-8-8 or visit 988lifeline.org to chat with a compassionate individual. You are never alone. #IPD #IndigenousPeoplesDay #SuicidePrevention #CommunityResilience

Intimate partner violence (IPV), defined as physical or psychological abuse that occurs in a current or former romantic relationship, is a severe public health concern. Poverty is both a predictor and a consequence of IPV. Thus, interventions that alleviate poverty-related stressors have the potential to mitigate IPV-related harms. TANF is an example of one potential IPV intervention. In Georgia, the TANF diversion program provides a non-recurrent lump-sum payment to deter individuals from monthly TANF benefits, which may influence TANF programs' effectiveness in supporting IPV survivors. Read more about Georgia's TANF diversion program and its impact on IPV here: https://buff.ly/4eXlTuk. #PeerTA #TANF #TA #TechnicalAssistance #OFA #ACF #HumanServices #SocialServices #IPV #DomesticViolence #IntimatePartnerViolence #Interventions

My lived experiences growing up in poverty, surrounded by drugs, violence, and instability, didn’t break me—they built me. Those early years gave me a unique lens on the world, a deep understanding of struggle, and a firsthand knowledge of the systems that often fail the most vulnerable among us. These experiences didn’t just shape my worldview—they laid the foundation for how I lead today. When I work in supportive housing, I’m not just focused on providing shelter—I’m creating safe spaces where people can rebuild their lives, just as I had to. When I advocate for survivors of domestic violence, it’s with the deep understanding of how violence can tear apart families and futures, and the unshakeable belief that safety and dignity are non-negotiable. My leadership comes from a place of empathy, urgency, and an unwavering commitment to breaking cycles of poverty and violence. I do this work because I know what it’s like to feel like the odds are stacked against you—and I’m determined to make sure others don’t feel that same weight, alone. Our experiences shape us, but they don’t define us. They equip us to lead, to serve, and to be the change we needed when we were young. #LivedExperience #SupportiveHousing #DomesticViolenceAdvocacy #LeadershipWithPurpose #BreakingCycles

Does your nonprofit assist people who have experienced or are experiencing homelessness? Then you need to speak out today. In its biggest decision on homelessness in decades, the U.S. Supreme Court today overturned lower court rulings that deemed it cruel and unusual to punish people for sleeping outside if they had nowhere else to go. It is now illegal to be homeless. Nonprofits: ☝️ How are we reaching out to our communities to educate them on the impact of this decision? ☝️ How are we showing up for our clients, our volunteers, and our staff, many of whom will be affected by this ruling? ☝️ What information are we sharing with our donors? The data shows that saddling people with fines and a criminal record makes it even harder for them to eventually get into housing. I recommend following Invisible People and the National Low Income Housing Coalition for powerful storytelling and accurate information. Now is not the time to be silent.

Grants Pass shouldn't have been brought to the Supreme Court. It wasn't a solid enough case against a "class." Now every city will do what Grants Pass was allowed to do. We as activists need to introduce laws at the state level in every state to define the unhoused as a "vulnerable" or "protected" class. Without it, even the Supreme Court Justice's mentioned (in the case) that is the only way to win at that level. The Law must: Target a "Class," not the class's "actions" Also, when challenging the constitution there needs to be clear and convincing evidence that a law's language is meant to limit the freedoms of a "class." We need a centralized database for people/advocates across the country to report local and state law changes, so we can provide information of where it is legal and safer to camp vs areas where is it a crime. That way we can keep pushing cases to the Supreme Court, that are actually unconstitutional. Plus, the unhoused and those who help them, will have an easier time finding places where they will be safe from the law.
We're just witnessing the early stages of how the criminalization of homelessness and punitive responses will escalate.
