Senior homes refuse to pick up fallen residents, dial 911. “Why are they calling us?” - The Washington Post Lift-assist 911 calls from assisted living and other senior homes have spiked by 30 percent nationwide in recent years to nearly 42,000 calls a year, an analysis of fire department emergency call data by The Washington Post has found. That’s nearly three times faster than the increase in overall 911 call volume during the same 2019-2022 period, the data shows. The growth has infuriated first responders who say these kinds of calls — which involve someone who has fallen and is not injured but can’t get up — unfairly burden taxpayers and occupy firefighters with nonemergencies that should be handled by staff at facilities that charge residents as much as $7,000 a month. https://buff.ly/3wnOQ1q

Great video that does a good job breaking down the challenges to building more attainable housing in the US. Using the policy ideas of the presidential candidates as a backdrop of sorts. It’s hard to breakdown all the challenges in a 7-minute video. The central thesis is correct: it’s Econ 101, supply and demand, and we have a major supply issue. And adding supply is the only way out of our affordability crisis. While Trump is less clear on his policies for housing he hits on the right chord of reducing regulations as a key, but he fails to understand that the suburbs in many markets cannot continue to be built as they were. They need at least some gentle density if we are going to be able to provide the supply needed to reduce the cost of housing. And while Harris is more specific with her plans they also miss the mark - providing demand-side solutions to a market that is woefully under-supplied will not fix the affordability problem. It could exacerbate it. Also, her plan seems to invite much more government into the building or at least funding process. That’s the current recipe and it isn’t working. Kudos to both candidates for talking about the issue. It is vital to discuss, at all levels of government, how we postively focus housing and land use policy in a way that yields more housing options - at all points along the housing continuum, from subsidized to luxury. We in the industry have to seize on this attention to the issue, lean in more than we already do, and educate policymakers about how to address supply. In Colorado, that largely means our local governments. We stand ready to have these conversations and will be initiating them even more frequently. We also thank the local govts and local govt reps, like the Colo Municipal League, for reaching out and asking what needs to change. Members and industry folks, start by sharing this video. Then join our efforts at the HBA of Metro Denver to continue educating and advocating for change. #HBAhere4good #ColoradoMunicipalLeague #coleg

We’re playing our part to help solve the #HousingCrisis. Over the last 5 year's we’ve built around 3,500 homes in York and North Yorkshire. With over 10,000 people on housing waiting lists across the region it’s vital that we build the right homes, in the right place. But we need all political parties to commit to a long-term #PlanForHousing to tackle the housing crisis once and for all. That’s why we’re supporting the National Housing Federation's election campaign calling on the next government to make real changes that will help build the homes people need. #UKHousing #SocialHousing #AffordableHousing
