🌍 New Research Alert! 🌱 I am excited to share the results of a groundbreaking research collaboration with #FolasadeFoyekePeters that delve deep into an increasingly critical topic: Analysis of Corporate Environmental Cost Disclosure on Profitability of Listed Manufacturing Firms in Nigeria. In today’s world, businesses are constantly being challenged to balance profitability with sustainability, and our study sheds light on just how these two goals can go hand in hand. Here’s what we discovered: 📈 Companies that disclose their environmental costs, including areas such as pollution detection, social responsibility, and compliance expenses, see a notable positive impact on their profitability, particularly reflected in improved net profit margins. 💡 Our research proves that transparency in environmental costs isn't just good for the planet; it’s good for businesses. Manufacturing firms that adopt clear environmental reporting practices enjoy better reputations, attract socially responsible investors, and ultimately see growth in their bottom line. What does this mean for the future of business in Nigeria? 🔍 We argue that environmental cost disclosures should be made mandatory, as the long-term benefits far outweigh the costs. The Nigerian manufacturing sector has a massive opportunity to align with global sustainability practices and enhance their profitability at the same time. 🔗 Want to know more? Check out the full study here: https://lnkd.in/e6XdJh_U I’m incredibly proud of this collaboration and hope it contributes to a broader discussion on the role of corporate responsibility and sustainability in driving profitability. If a globally respected organization with a credible commitment to fighting climate change went around certifying carbon credits, and it had a rigorous process for examining each carbon-credit project and making sure that it represented true carbon removal, then its credits would probably have a lot of “public-relations, regulatory, market” value. And then if I went to one of its forests and found that a few acres of trees had burned down without anyone noticing, so the actual amount of carbon removal it certified was slightly higher than what it achieved, I’m not sure it would matter that much. Nobody is buying the credits as a physics experiment, making the quantities balance exactly in physical reality is not the goal. Being able to say “we are carbon neutral,” and having people believe you, is the goal. That goal requires some general rigor and good faith, but it will tolerate a certain amount of physical slippage. And so if the actual government comes to you and says “we’re having a special sale on carbon credits, act now and we’ll give you two tonnes of carbon credit for every tonne of carbon you remove,” that’s … fine? Ish? It’s, like, kind of okay as long as not too many people find out? And then if they do find out it’s awkward and embarrassing but not the end of the world? I don’t know 🤷🏾♂️

A few days ago, I was a participant in a very insightful and educative webinar organized by Andersen in Nigeria on Sustainability reporting standards and their profound impact on business models. As a Sustainable Enthusiast and a part of the public sector, the forum presented an opportunity for me to get valuable insights into financial and sustainability-related reporting, IFRS-related modifications, and regulatory and economic developments at the global stage down to the Nigerian business climate. Also, the discussion afforded me the opportunity to ask panelists their views on how they believe the government, beyond usual rhetorics, can contribute to the Sustainability drive as well as how individuals in the sector can be encouraged to actively participate without restraints. This and many other issues were discussed extensively. On the heels of this, the 'Biodun Oyebanji-led administration Government of Ekiti State, Nigeria has just assented to five (5) Laws in the State. Chief among these is the EKITI STATE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND WATERSHED MANAGEMENT AGENCY LAW, 2024 which is a huge step in the drive to safeguard the environment and its users. This is another strategic and well-taught-out action of the Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji led government to touch the lives of residents in a way different from others and the people love it. Now it is time for players and stakeholders in the Environmental Protection and Sustainability drive in the State to make the best use of the enablement this law would bring. Now, there is a framework and cover for strategic urbanization in the State that would help preserve the ecosystem as well as spell out the roles of every stakeholder. We need to protect and sustain the environment so that it does not consume us. #SustainabilityReporting #SustainableBusiness #ESGReporting #ClimateAction #EkitiGovernment #EnvironmentLaws #Urbanization #SustainableDevelopment #GreenEconomy #SDGs #BAO #Sustainability #Environment #EnvironmentalStewardship #ReportingStandards #ClimateChange #ClimateDisclosure #GlobalGoals

Environmental Industry is one of the key industries that cuts across nearly all disciplines and areas. We saw the gap and the need to intervene in this industry most especially to eradicate major environmental challenges facing in Nigeria and we are glad we are doing it passionately while effecting the change we had envisaged.

In Mongolia, the improved implementation of the law on natural resource use payment has tripled the country's environmental expenditure. UNDP BIOFIN has increased the effectiveness of the law by improving transparency in budgeting and strengthening the capacity of local actors in environmental management. 🌱⬆️ As a result, total spending on the environment in #Mongolia has increased by 170% in 2023 compared to the previous national average, reaching US$ 11.92 million. It is expected to further increase to US$ 22.43 million by 2024. The law can generate over US$15 million annually — more than enough to close Mongolia's current #biodiversity funding gap of US$10 million per year. 📖 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dTZGaZQc #finance4nature UNDP Mongolia Country Office Onno van den Heuvel Tracey Cumming Ainur Shalakhanova UNDP in Asia and the Pacific

Embracing the Circular Economy for a Sustainable Future Nigeria's environment minister, Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has taken a significant step towards sustainable development by advocating for the adoption of a circular economy. This transformative approach aims to maintain a balanced ecosystem by integrating environmental protection with economic growth. By promoting the recycling and reusing of materials, the circular economy minimizes waste and conserves resources, fostering long-term sustainability. During a recent workshop focused on the circular economy's role in combating land degradation in sectors like construction and mining, Minister Lawal highlighted the importance of shifting away from traditional linear economic practices. This shift not only promises environmental benefits but also has the potential to create new economic opportunities and jobs, contributing to a more resilient and sustainable economy for Nigeria. How do you think your industry can integrate circular economy principles to enhance sustainability and economic growth? #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #EnvironmentalProtection #EconomicGrowth #Nigeria #GreenEconomy - - - - - - - - - - P.S.: If you enjoyed this post, you might also love our creative coloring books!
