FMNR- A component under WVI_BSL programming model is working wonders in East Africa
How can underground forests transform children’s lives? The answer is fascinating! As we mark #earthday, I want to share what I’ve learned about “Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration”, or #FMNR. In the past decade, we’ve re-greened and restored millions of acres of land with this technique. The results are incredible! Put simply, this is all about re-growing trees and shrubs from felled tree stumps, with huge environmental benefits – as well as nutritious food for children, and countless other advantages. It’s low cost and creates resilience to climate extremes and fighting poverty and hunger at the same time. World Vision does this in East Africa, Australia, Latin America and Middle East with amazing results. The inspirational Tony Rinaudo told me exactly how it works. #climateaction #sustainability #environment #innovation #foodinnovation #climatechange #globalgoals #worldvision

🌍 Reflections on the Planetary Health Coalition Meeting: Water Scarcity and Its Impact on Communities 🌍 Our recent Planetary Health Coalition meeting was a profound exploration of #water scarcity and its multifaceted impacts, made even richer by the insights of Lumbie Mlambo, Marijah Butcher, and Water Okombo. Each of these leaders offered invaluable perspectives on the intersections between #water, #health, #equity, and #communityresilience. Lumbie Mlambo, CEO of JB Dondolo Inc., shared her critical work in sustainable water solutions that uplift underserved communities, particularly empowering women and children. Marijah Butcher, with her extensive UN experience, emphasized the role of policy in securing sustainable access to clean water. Water Okombo, from Kenya’s Inspiring Progress Community-Based Organisation, gave us an on-the-ground view of community-led projects, from Safe and Clean Water for All to Teenage Mothers Empowerment, which is child-centered and focuses on restoring family dignity and stability. Through the #PlanetaryHealth lens, we understand that #water scarcity isn’t just a local issue but part of a broader #ecological and #social #ecosystem that impacts #health, #genderequality, and #educational access worldwide. The "#DecolonizeWater" approach underscores this understanding, urging us to challenge historical inequities and redefine #water as a shared resource for all. #Water scarcity affects everything from #health and #safety to opportunities for #girls, who often lose out on #education due to the daily hours spent fetching water. The ripple effects extend to increased #genderinequalities and #socialinjustices that need #holistic, #inclusivesolutions. By #collaborating across sectors—from #engineers and #advocates to #governments and #artists in places as diverse as #Zimbabwe, #Texas, #California, and #Kenya—we’re stepping toward a shared goal: restoring dignity, protecting resources, and ensuring that clean water access is recognized as a fundamental human right. Together, we’re redefining our shared responsibility, working to restore homes, dignity, and a future where all communities thrive. #PlanetaryHealth #WaterScarcity #DecolonizeWater #InspiringProgress #YouthEmpowerment #GlobalCollaboration #EnvironmentalJustice #EquityInHealth #HolisticSolutions #TIWN #Rebornfromtheforest

In the frame of the #EarthDay it's important to remember how the #NatureBasedSolitions are great tools to contribute to regenerate the degraded land and protect children, families and communities who depends totally of the environmental services provided by those lands to overcome poverty. World Vision 's Farmed Managed Resources Management created by Tony Rinaudo, the Forest Maker, its a good example of how a cost-effective community based model can change everything in the most complex contexts and provide a new opportunity for thousands of #children.

I had the chance, last year, of visiting the #Kasigau REDD+ project. I saw the great many animals and birds whose survival would be extremely difficult (if possible at all) without the project; a project that would itself not survive without carbon credits. I interacted with the project implementers, their partner community members and local leaders. The project impact speaks for itself. Some things can/should, of course, be improved about carbon finance modalities in general. Carbon finance is a relatively new and evolving space. Project developers/implementers and their partners (can/should) learn/adjust on the go, considering the genius of the place. What's there to gain if carbon finance is shot down rather than allowed and helped to improve? Who stands to gain?
In this candid conversation, John Mwakima, a community leader from Kenya, shares his firsthand experience with the Kasigau Corridor REDD+ project with Mike Korchinsky, Founder and President of Wildlife Works. Born and raised in a town within the decade-old REDD+ project, John has seen the transformational before-and-after effects of the project on his community. Together, Mike and John dive deep into the often-misunderstood world of #voluntarycarbonmarkets and their impact on communities in the Global South. As western organizations make sweeping decisions about the future of the voluntary carbon market, it is critical that local community members who have been directly affected by these projects are effectively consulted. This conversation aims to amplify one such voice, offering invaluable insights from the ground level. As John puts it in this conversation, “For example with regards to the recent statement by SBTi, we are wondering, how can they release a statement, a report, saying that there are negligible impacts of carbon credits as far as mitigating the climate change impact is concerned? Why aren't they coming to the ground and gathering information from us and interviewing us to see for themselves?” Listen to the full conversation, linked in the comments below. #CarbonCreditsWork #REDD+ #ClimateAction #KasigauCorridor

I’ve had the honor and privilege to work with our brothers and sisters in the global south on advancing more just, equitable and sustainable climate policy for most of my career. It’s hard to overstate how differently I see the world as a result of that work. They, their communities, and the landscapes and ecosystems they steward are the reason why we’re working so hard to ensure that we have balanced and inclusive net zero targets and strategies. Most of the money for mitigation we have sits in the global north- we need to make sure we have clear, transparent and credible pathways to channel that money to where it’s needed most- front line communities and ecosystems in the developing world- while also pushing the deep decarbonization of developed economies as quickly as possible. We can and must do both of these things at the same time. We’ve learned a lot over the past two decades of this work- as John Mwakima so eloquently shares here- having grown up in the area of one of the longest running REDD+ projects in the world and seeing first hand the life changing benefits this market has brought.

Today is World Environment Day, and this year’s theme, 'Generation Restoration', highlights the critical issues of land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. At Health Partners, we are working to support the solution through our partnership with Tree Nation. This European NGO's dedication to tree-planting initiatives across developing nations aligns perfectly with our values, and Tree Nation's reforestation projects are at the frontline of combating desertification. To date, our collaboration with Tree Nation has resulted in over 6,600 trees planted, underlining our commitment to not only offset emissions but to help forge a sustainable future.
