A coffee conversation at the beginning of the year culminated yesterday with our session on ‘Compass & Kaleidoscope: Embracing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion through Ethics’ at the 23rd Ethics and Compliance Institute Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE) Grapevine, Texas. Thank you, Aparna Pathak (She/Her) for the partnership and collaboration. Key takeaways from the session included: - How Ethics and DEI are critical business imperatives. - Key success factors and challenges in driving the DEI agenda within organizations. - An introduction to the Corporate Ethical Virtues Model by Muel Kaptein. We delved deep into ethical virtues, sharing insights and experiences on what each virtue means from a DEI perspective. We also explored how organizations worldwide are advancing DEI by integrating these virtues into their culture. One of the highlights was a case study on how a multinational corporation drives the #DEI agenda through its Code of Ethics. This afternoon I had a conversation with a professional consultant about an ethical case that has apparently create a stink- as many ethical cases do when reported. We spoke about where ethics come from and who gives the professional their ethics. We spoke about the role of whistleblowers and the courage of their work and why society needs them. What we didn't talk about, which is just as important, is why Professional Consultants should distinguish themselves by aligning themselves with a professional body that can advocate on their behalf. Ethics are a complex issue - and rules are too simplistic a way of dealing with ethics. Happy Global Ethics Day - Whatever is left of it.
