Shockingly over 80% of foster carers are not given all the information about a child at the begining of a placement* However you can give your foster carer's their own ultimate Accredited Foster Carer's Qualification to prepare them fully for their role. This is the difference, especially when new children arrive and they have little or no information. Can we please have a conversation about this? The image depicts two nurturing carers with a newborn baby representing fostering as this picture perfect experience for both parties. The reality we all know is far from the truth. I truly don’t know how the The Daily Telegraph in all good conscience could print this article knowing the depths of the issues for foster carers not only in NSW but across the country. Of course I can understand we are in desperate need for foster carers but let’s talk about a few truths that this photo has left out and a few considerations they could have included to keep things honest and real. 1. How would this image impact young people who are currently in SIL, ITC and Group home arrangements? Does this picture include them? 2. Can we talk about the wide range of medical, developmental and complex trauma concerns that come with the territory of fostering and the information people need to know before making a commitment? 3. Have the tens of thousands of children in care, their birth families, carers and their children been who have had their lives destroyed be biased, uniformed and decisions made with zero evidence been considered before the release of this article? This article does highlight the importance of the need for foster carers but before placing any children or carers in the position that many of us have been in. Please improve your system first. It’s truly not that hard to do, you have been offered many solutions and there are so many skilled people out there just like my husband and I who also fit your Aboriginal quota.
