Do you know how much annual leave you have in 2024? 🗓
If you work the standard 8-hour, 5-day week, your payslip should show 240 total hours of annual leave.
It gets more complicated for the rest.
Every time a public holiday falls on one of your off days, you are given one day extra to your annual leave.
This also applies to part-time employees!
For each Public Holiday you 'lose' by not working, you need to receive more leave or payment.
Got any questions?
Did you know?
You earn 1 day for every 22 days worked in order to earn a vacation day.
As it relates to sick days, employees are granted two weeks (10 working days) of paid leave per year. Three weeks (15 working days) of paid leave is given to employees with over ten (10) years of continuous service.
Holding onto vacation days is basically like a personal savings account!
(If your employees don’t use their paid time-off, you have pay out these hours when their employment ends💲🧾)
BUT, paid sick leave plays by a totally different rule🎲
What is that rule???
⏳Use it OR Lose it⏳
Whether you frontload paid sick leave, use an accrual system, or operate with an alternative method, make sure your employees know that not all time-off is money in the bank 💰🏦🏧

Paid Leave:
❌ Not your employer’s choice
✅ It’s your right
Under the Shops & Establishment Act, employers must give their employees a certain number of paid leave days every year.
The total number of earned leave days can vary by state.
Your leave is calculated based on how long you’ve worked.
In some states, you get one paid leave day for every 12 days of work. In others, this number could be 15, 18, or 20.
Also, a company must compulsorily give employees a weekly day off.
If your employer asks you to work on your weekly off or compulsory holidays like Independence Day or Republic Day, they’re liable to give you a compensatory leave.
So, does your office offer paid leave? Yes or No?
28 days annual leave including bank holidays (the legal minimum) really doesn't cut it any more ❌
The average UK employee took 33.9 days of annual leave (including 9 bank holidays) in 2023. That tells us that the average company is offering at least 24.9 days of annual leave 🗓
So if you're offering the statutory minimum, your offering is way below average 📊
From a business point of view, offering annual leave above the statutory minimum offers a great return on investment.
✅ There is no upfront cost to your business, yet your Employee Value
Proposition improves significantly!
✅ Your staff feel valued and therefore more motivated
✅ They are more rested and therefore more productive
✅ Your turnover probably decreases
What's not to like?!
