EU provides protection against risky artificial intelligence systems starting today If my data is used to train artificial intelligence (AI) software, how much of me will be in the system in the end? - What could the system then say about me? Could the system predict my behavior - could it even imitate me - in speaking, gestures, facial expressions and argumentation? Incredible possibilities - but if my personality can be credibly imitated or even reproduced in a manipulative way, then the fun stops! The EU is wise and forward-looking with the AI law that comes into force today - with the aim of averting dangers from misuse. EU countries have 2 years to implement the law. Providers of AI services in the EU must classify them according to risk categories and make this visible to consumers. Certain possible applications, such as "social scoring" in China, are prohibited. Providers of AI services in the EU (even if located outside the EU) who do not comply with the law must expect severe penalties – an important signal from Europe for the protection of personal data and human rights. 🇰🇷 South Korea passes the AI Basic Act 🇰🇷 Here's everything you need to know in 5 minutes in my simple AI Cheat Sheet ⤵️ ➡️ On 26th December, the South Korean National Assembly voted to approve and adopt the AI Basic Act. ➡️ This is the world's second comprehensive AI regulation, following the EU AI Act. ➡️ South Korea's unified national AI framework aims to advance innovation, boost exports, mitigate AI risks and promote trustworthy AI. ➡️ Although the AI Basic Act has been somewhat influenced by the EU AI Act, there are some key differences. ➡️ For example, the maximum penalties are significant lower in the South Korean law. Also, imprisonment (of up to 3 years) is a possibility for specific violations. ➡️ The AI Basic Act applies from January 2026. A senior lawmaker in the Philippines, Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers, is advocating for a national regulatory body to oversee artificial intelligence (AI) usage. He has renewed efforts for House Bill No. 7396, filed in March last year, which proposes the establishment of a multi-agency AI Development Authority (Aida) aimed at leveraging AI's benefits while addressing its potential risks. Barbers stressed the urgency of creating a national agency, citing the progress of AI regulations in other countries. He highlighted AI's significant societal impacts on education, business, and the economy, arguing that the Philippines must embrace this technology to remain competitive. Although agencies like the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Education are developing their own AI policies, there is currently no centralized body for strategic governance. The proposed AI Development and Regulation Act in HB 7396 outlines Aida's responsibilities, which include implementing a comprehensive framework for AI development and governance in the Philippines. #AI #Philippines https://lnkd.in/g3TmWJW7

As artificial intelligence continues to advance, the question arises: is an algorithmic error a result of a technical defect (responsibility of the developer) or incorrect usage (responsibility of the user)? The EU is discussing the AI Act https://lnkd.in/eNzU39Xb, which proposes distributing responsibility based on the risk associated with algorithm use. High-risk AI systems may require companies to ensure transparency and control over their impact. In Ukraine, there are currently no clear regulations to address such situations, and proving the causal relationship between algorithm actions and harm remains challenging due to the technical complexity and lack of AI transparency. Nevertheless, AI solutions should not be avoided. To better ensure users understand their rights and responsibilities and to prevent unjustified claims, I recommend that AI resource owners develop and place appropriate disclaimers, including them in contracts and licenses that govern access to these resources.

DeepSeek-R1: A Breakthrough with Questions to Consider DeepSeek-R1, the latest AI model from China-based DeepSeek, has impressed the global AI community with its advanced capabilities. Marketed as open-source under the MIT license, it allows anyone to use and modify it for free, whether for business or research purposes. But is it truly open? And what are the risks? There are some key concerns to keep in mind: 1. Potential Biases – I worry that DeepSeek-R1 might reflect political or ideological biases in line with Chinese government policies. This raises questions about its objectivity and reliability in sensitive applications. 2. Data Security – Even though the model is open-source, there are concerns about how data entered into systems using it might be accessed or monitored. Could the Chinese government or other entities collect and analyze this information? I think we all know the answer to this question... 3. Transparency – While DeepSeek claims to be fully open, the level of transparency about its training data and ethical considerations remains unclear. Users and stakeholders should carefully evaluate the potential risks before deploying it. Why It Matters ? As AI models become more powerful and widely used, it’s crucial to ensure they align with ethical standards, data security practices, and transparency expectations. Businesses and developers should remain cautious and conduct thorough assessments before integrating DeepSeek-R1 into their systems. The same applies to all other models. I've been pretty inactive on here since creating my account, but something changed after attending the Magna Curia Chamber event organized by Gaius Olofin . It was such an amazing experience, and I'll be sharing more about it in my next post. For an assignment, our lecturer asked us to write a literature review on any topic, and I chose Artificial Intelligence. AI is seriously mind-blowing! I've been diving into the research and analysis of scholars in this field, and it's fascinating how AI is reshaping our world. It offers incredible possibilities, but there are also some significant challenges. In my paper, I focused on reviewing the regulation of Artificial Intelligence. It's such an important aspect to consider as this technology continues to advance. And guess what? https://lnkd.in/ge9JKjyW relating to AI Three useful discussion papers, from the Australian Productivity Commission, related to AI and how a country, in their case Australia, might position itself to use it, develop it and benefit from it, avoid being outpaced by others, while providing appropriate safeguards for society,including basic freedoms, including freedom of information, personal protection, data security etc... Some are alarmed by AI, and its potential loss of jobs or copying of ideas and material and forging of personal ID, or trying to examine students' output; others see its great potential ( eg for development of treatments and medicine, or allowing us to focus on less routine activities), while others see a more balance blend of risk and opportunity, with the need to better understand it to better use and manage it..It's here to stay so we need to understand and learn how best to relate to it, whether in Australia, the US, S Korea or PNG....
