June 7th marks World Food Safety Day. Through this international date, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) pursue efforts to mainstream food safety in the public agenda and reduce the burden of foodborne diseases globally. Food safety is a shared responsibility between governments, producers and consumers. Everybody has a role to play from farm to table to ensure the food we consume is safe for consumption. One of the standards that ensure food safety is product traceability. One of our recent blog posts introduces food traceability software as one of the answers to long-standing safety and regulatory challenges: https://ow.ly/V0x350S1Sca #markemimaje #WorldFoodSafetyDay #FoodSafety #SafeFood #blog #foodtraceability Markem-Imaje

Based on FDA’s Food Traceability Rule, many food producers are making great strides in advancing food traceability. However, a few are taking shortcuts, that will hinder progress, result in an inability to accurately pinpoint contaminated food, and contribute to passing bad and inaccurate data along the food chain. Ready my interview with Progressive Grocer to learn what pitfalls to avoid.

FDA’s Food Traceability Rule for certain foods goes into effect in January of 2026. While not surprised, there are a small few that have proposed making changes, such as eliminating the need to track lot codes through point of service, which would in essence “gut the rule” and make it “ineffective.” I speak with humble authority, as I led food policy and response at FDA for over 4 years. This article does a nice job of presenting what’s at play here and I am grateful that consumer groups and traceability experts adamately oppose it. Better food traceability can’t wait. Onwards. #foodtraceability STAT

Good Distribution Practice (GDP) Good distribution practice (GDP) is a set of guidelines that helps ensure that products are consistently produced and controlled to the quality standards appropriate for their intended use. GDP can be used in the food industry as well and covers everything from warehouse management to transportation to customer delivery. By following GDP guidelines, food producers can help ensure that their products are safe and high quality. Warehouse Management Warehouses must be organized in a way that enables easy access to products with the closest expiration. This requires proper rotation, which involves moving products that are closest to their expiry date to the front of the shelf, and newer products to the back. This practice helps ensure that products are sold before they expire, reducing waste and improving food safety.
