2023: A Year of Groundbreaking Research and Societal Impact In 2023, over 1,700 researchers from 34 countries conducted more than 300 research projects at MAX IV, marking a 31% increase in user engagement compared to the previous year. The year also resulted in a record number of published articles, with publications increasing by 51% over 2022. As the first fourth-generation synchrotron facility, MAX IV has catalysed a global paradigm shift in accelerator physics and synchrotron light, enabling unprecedented studies of matter. 2023 marked a pivotal year as all hereto funded beamlines became available in our User calls, unleashing the full potential of the present beamline portfolio of MAX IV for the first time. With MAX IV, Sweden is positioned to strengthen its status as a leader in research and innovation. Research performed at MAX IV includes: · Unveiling previously undocumented connections between copper and iron occurrences in brain tissue and Alzheimer's disease pathology. · Observing structural changes in Li-ion batteries during use, which is crucial for optimising rechargeable batteries with reduced environmental impact. · Shedding new light on how the gut environment affects drug efficacy. · Providing fresh insights into optimising catalyst efficiency for cold-start conditions, crucial for hydrogen production. · Analysing the cloud-forming ability of particles from various fuels to assess the environmental impact of global shipping through the Arctic. The industry invested about 850 hours in beamtime, demonstrating the strong and growing need from industry to have access to state-of-the-art research tools for their advancement. In 2023, MAX IV launched a new ten-year strategy and action plan. Collaborating with the Wallenberg Initiative Material Science for Sustainability (WISE), we also developed proposals for three new beamlines dedicated to sustainability research, leading to the development of two full Technical Design Reports in 2024. As other synchrotron facilities face downtimes, user groups and international industrial users are turning to MAX IV. This trend is evident in our user statistics and requests, with several Swedish global industrial actors investing in platforms to leverage MAX IV e.g. for accelerating the green transition. Sweden therefore has a unique opportunity to further position itself in the global research ecosystem with MAX IV. However, prioritised, long-term funding is essential for maintaining operations and development. I extend my deepest gratitude to all users, staff, funders, partners, and all advisory bodies for your incredible efforts and collaboration. Thanks to you, 2023 was a record-breaking year for MAX IV and Sweden. Together, we are enabling world-class research for a brighter future. The Swedish minister for research and higher education Johan Pehrson, the minster for enterprise and climate Ebba Busch and the Swedish minister for EU-policy Jessica Rosencrantz just presented the new Research & Innovation bill for Sweden 2025-2028, with reforms for 6500 MSEK. There are a lot of good initiatives, and I am especially happy that the government follows some of the ideas that I proposed during my time in the battery industry, including increased investments in industrialization of batteries, additional university funding and an investment in a research center on critical minerals for batteries and other strategic materials. Additionally, our proposal with an industrial research school for synchrotron and neutron technology are mentioned as one of the instruments that the research funding agencies can use to increase the societal usage of large scale research infrastructures, such as MAX IV and ESS. https://lnkd.in/d3dqHbyk

*Postdoctoral Researchers from Stanford and Berkeley Weigh Collaborative Opportunity During Meet-up at Beckman Symposium* Tracy Schloemer, PhD and Conner Harper, PhD are both chemists and also recipients of the Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowship awarded in 2022. But that is pretty much where the similarities end. Yet recently, the two found that their independent work might actually have common ground and present an opportunity for collaboration. Schloemer’s research, at Stanford University, focuses on the development of light-activated technologies that can be used in manufacturing processes and for smart materials. Harper’s work, at the University of California, Berkeley involves the development of charge detection mass spectrometry (CDMS) instrumentation that enables the rapid analysis of nanoparticle-sized molecules. The odds of the two researchers ever attending the same conferences, despite their geographic proximity, were very low. However, the Beckman Symposium is unique for the composition of its attendees: Undergraduate researchers, early tenure-track faculty researchers and postdoctoral researchers network, present, and workshop together at the same event. “It was serendipitous,” Schloemer said of their meet-up during a poster session and subsequent collaboration. “This only happens at the Beckman Symposium.” “I saw Tracy’s poster about nanocapsules,” shared Harper. “The CDMS instrumentation I have been developing is aimed at weighing large and heterogeneous molecular structures, so I said, ‘Hey, would it be worth it to weigh these?’ Tracy said yes, we started collaborating, and then we started getting some interesting results.” Read the full article: https://ow.ly/n65i50Ut2kb #beckman #beckmansymposium #postersession #research #collaboration #AOBpostdoc #chemistry #stanford #berkeley #cal #CDMS #lightactivatedtech #smartmaterials #nanocapsules #data #results #seredipity #fridayfeature
