Fellow Safety Officer 📌 When I first began in health and safety, I noticed that our industry often leans heavily on experience, the experts with years of hands-on knowledge and deep insights. But it didn’t take long to realize that fresh perspectives are just as essential. You might think that being new means you’ll struggle to make your voice heard among those who’ve been here for years, but trust me, that’s not the case. This field thrives on a blend of seasoned wisdom, fresh energy, and innovative ideas. Early on, I decided to put my skills and knowledge out there, even though I didn’t have decades of experience. I focused on communicating about health and safety in approachable ways, sparking discussions wherever I could. To my surprise, I started getting comments like, “I never realized health and safety could be so relevant outside of construction or manufacturing!” Little by little, these conversations helped build my confidence and, in time, my commitment started bearing fruit. Make it your mission to have these conversations about health and safety wherever you go. You’d be amazed at what you can learn from others and what you can teach them in return. Your consistent presence and approachability will make a difference. And remember, you’re not here to compete with experienced officers. Your perspective, ideas, and drive are exactly what the health and safety field needs to keep moving forward. Every opportunity to engage is a chance to establish yourself as a trusted voice. I find it interesting to enlighten people a lot about health and Safety everywhere I go ,even my friends that know nothing about health and safety do find it interesting so they made it an habit to ask me questions about things they don’t understand I’ve been opportuned to perform emergency first Aid to random people having health scares on different occasions and each time I was either with one of them and to my surprise they’ve been learning from me and usually know what to do in emergency situations like that. It really helps a lot conciously and unconsciously. You never know who’s watching or gaining from you. The experience could be in your training classes on or off the field you name it, I do learn a lot from people asides taking news courses that interests me i mean I learn from Safety Mentors(Both new and well experienced ) ,Engineers,Supervisors, Employees at work , Medical Professionals, Job interviews etc as long as it would help you develop and shape you into becoming Better at what you do everyday don’t stop and one thing I’ve done that’s worked for me I do not let years of experience required from a job Ad intimidate me. It’s sometimes necessary but you’d get there eventually so don’t stop doing what you do
