All of my fellow sterile processing infection preventionists, I give you: A surgeon giving a woman a haircut by chatGPT. It makes about as much sense as many of the obstacles and challenges we face in sterile processing, from our fight to standardize processes, or require certification for everyone in our field in every state. The status quo is that everyone can do our jobs. How many of you have worked in facilities where they have staff from other departments come “help out” or professionals in other fields of healthcare telling you how to do your job when they have never set foot into a sterile processing department and lived a day in the life of a technician? I know many of us feel like we don’t have a voice in our own departments. It’s no wonder our industry keeps popping up in the news, with articles about dirty instruments making it into our OR’s. I’m here to tell you that you do have a voice…WE have a voice, but maybe you’re using it to speak to the wrong person or wrong audience. Someone I respect very much said something to me here in Vegas that really just put many things into perspective regarding the carelessness regarding taking certification in sterile processing seriously, she said “If you go to get your haircut at a salon, the person that cuts your hair has to be certified.” No uncertified person can just go to the salon to “help out.” Yet we are processing surgical instruments that are going into the human body, and we can hire people off of the street with no experience and train on the job, no certification required. Meanwhile, heaven forbid Sally walk around with a bad haircut by an uncertified stylist! If you ask me, it’s as silly as asking my surgeon for a haircut. #infectionprevention #AAMI #AORN #APIC #sterileprocessing #patientsafety #quality #education #knowledgeispower #certification #HSPA #FDA

Medical Officer Assessment as per NABH: The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) defines specific standards for the assessment and role of Medical Officers in healthcare institutions. The assessment of Medical Officers is integral to maintaining patient safety, quality care, and operational efficiency in hospitals. Key Areas of Assessment: Clinical Competency: Medical Officers are evaluated on their ability to perform accurate diagnosis and provide evidence-based treatment. They must also demonstrate proficiency in using medical equipment, maintaining patient records, and managing emergencies. Patient Safety and Care: NABH emphasizes patient-centered care, which includes ensuring patient rights, maintaining confidentiality, and adhering to clinical protocols. Medical Officers are assessed on their ability to follow infection control protocols, handle adverse events, and perform safe medication practices. Communication and Collaboration: Effective communication with patients, families, and healthcare teams is critical. NABH standards focus on the ability of Medical Officers to provide clear, compassionate explanations of diagnoses and treatment plans, and collaborate with nurses and other healthcare professionals. Continuous Learning and Improvement: NABH mandates that Medical Officers engage in continuous professional development. This includes staying updated with the latest medical guidelines, attending training programs, and participating in quality improvement initiatives like vertical and horizontal audits. Compliance with NABH Standards: Medical Officers are assessed on their adherence to NABH policies, including documentation, ethical practices, and overall compliance with safety norms. Adherence to staffing norms and proper workload distribution, as per NABH guidelines, is also crucial. Conclusion: The NABH Medical Officer Assessment ensures that healthcare institutions deliver safe, effective, and high-quality care through systematic evaluation and improvement of medical officer performance. #assessment #healthcare #excellence #patientsafety #ISQUA #NABH #JCI #AACI #AkashTiwari

Medical Records and NABH..... Medical records are of critical importance in the NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers) accreditation process, as they serve as vital documentation of patient care and hospital operations. Key reasons include: 1. Patient Care Continuity: Proper documentation ensures that accurate and complete medical information is available to all healthcare providers, facilitating coordinated care and reducing the risk of errors. 2. Compliance and Legal Protection: Medical records provide evidence that healthcare practices comply with legal, regulatory, and ethical standards, protecting both the hospital and patients in case of disputes or audits. 3. Quality Monitoring: NABH emphasizes patient safety and quality improvement. Properly maintained records allow for systematic review and monitoring, helping hospitals track outcomes, identify trends, and implement quality improvement measures. 4. Data for Audits: NABH conducts regular audits as part of its accreditation process. Comprehensive medical records ensure that hospitals can demonstrate compliance with NABH standards in areas such as patient safety, treatment protocols, and infection control. 5. Informed Decision Making: Well-maintained records enable healthcare providers to make informed decisions, ensuring that treatments are based on accurate patient histories, diagnostic results, and prior interventions. 6. Research and Education: Medical records also contribute to research and the education of healthcare staff by providing real-life data for studies and training purposes. In summary, the importance of medical records in NABH lies in ensuring compliance, improving patient safety, enhancing quality care, and supporting legal and ethical standards. #shalby #JCI #AACI #NABH #PATIENTSAFETY #HELATHCARE #EXCELLENCE #AkashTiwari

Words matter. Because of this, so do definitions. Which is why I'm going to take special care with answering this question 👇 What is SPD? Or to expand the abbreviation a little, What is Sterile Processing? There's an SEO-rich answer, fashioned to drive clicks and rank your page on Google searches. That's the realm of marketing teams and website designers. That answer is almost never really getting to the heart of the question, though. While no single definition and description is going to cover every base, highlight every nuance, and clarify every misconception, I'm going to give it the old college try here. Let me know what you think: Question: What is SPD? Answer: Sterile Processing is a complex, clinically-relevant niche within the surgical branch of healthcare, responsible for the intake, processing, quality management, infection prevention, and distribution of medical devices and implants necessary for surgical procedures. Within this subset of healthcare includes roles such as SP Technician, Educator, Operations Manager, Clinical Director, Quality Assurance, Data Specialist, Repair Technician, Validation Scientist, Manufacturer, Medical Device Representative, Compliance Specialist, Inventor, Infection Preventionist, Marketing Manager, Customer Service Representative, Installer, Service Technician, Consultant, Surgical Technologist, Nurse Manager, and Student. Contributions to this industry subset come from SPD clinicians inside the acute care and ambulatory setting, as well as a surrounding superstructure of scientists, manufacturers, innovators, regulators, service providers, authors, researchers, and advocates that round out the entire surgical ecosystem. Bonus Answer: What is (NOT) SPD? Answer: Sterile Processing is not an assembly line. Sterile Processing is not manufacturing. Sterile Processing is not exclusive to inside the four walls of a hospital. Sterile Processing is not simply the cleaning and sterilization of medical devices. Sterile Processing is not easy to understand or fix. To summarize, I think SPD is much bigger, broader, and deeper than we give it credit for -- with many more streams of impact flowing in and out of our departments. If more of us could keep this "big vision" before us, I believe we'd be much bolder to both dream AND do big things. What say you? [PS - As always, disagreements and/or pushbacks are welcome.] #Definition #SPD #SterileProcessing #WhatIsIt #BeyondClean #WeFightDirty
