Homelessness is a very serious issue in the City of Seattle and across King County, with African Americans making up a disproportionate number of people seeking shelter and permanent housing. Africatown Community Land Trust, or ACLT, based in Seattle’s Central District, is a community-based organization confronting this issue head-on. Located on 16th and Yesler, the Benu Community Home, operated by ACLT, opened in December 2021 and is a low-barrier enhanced shelter for single adult males. Just a few weeks ago, ACLT celebrated Benu Community Day. The day served as a rallying call to showcase the impact of Benu Community Home and, to unveil the Benu Impact Report, which detailed the transformative work being done to uplift unhoused Black men in Seattle and King County. As the city grapples with a homelessness crisis—where nearly 30% of the unhoused population are Black despite making up less than 7% of the total population—Benu Community Home stands as a lifeline for change. The Benu Report detailed a holistic approach to not just providing shelter, but creating a foundation for renewal, support, and empowerment. Benu’s model transforms lives by offering a safe space to heal, build community, and reclaim opportunity. This segment was produced by Kennesha Poe-Buycks, Carlos Imani, and The Elite Collective for Back2Besa and originally aired on October 5th on FOX 13 Seattle. In recent years, homelessness in New York City has reached the highest level since the Great Depression of the 1930s. In April 2024, 131,940 people slept each night in NYC shelters. Thousands more (there is no reliable number, as the annual HOPE estimate is deeply flawed) slept unsheltered in public spaces, and more than 200,000 people slept temporarily doubled-up in the homes of others. Thus, it can be estimated that more than 350,000 people were without homes in NYC in April 2024. . . . Help us continue our important work! We can end homelessness together, forever. Housing is a fundamental human right. No one should have to worry about where they are going to sleep tonight. 📃 Source:Basic Facts About Homelessness: New York City; Coalition for the Homeless, Inc. #endhomelessness #endthestigma #doubledup #doubledupishomeless #housingisahumanright #winterwalk #nyc #newyorkcity #homelessinnyc

Today marks the beginning of Homelessness Week, a critical time for us at the St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria to raise our voices and shine a light on the pressing issue of homelessness here at home. Just a few days ago, we gathered at Parliament House to amplify our advocacy efforts and demand change. Our dedicated team at VincentCare Victoria joined forces with the Victorian Homelessness Network (VHN) and called for urgent action to increase social housing. With 60,000+ households on the social housing waitlist and numbers rising, VHN is pressing State and Federal Governments to commit to building at least 60,000 additional social homes. As a powerful symbol of this campaign, 60,000 origami houses were folded, and 6,000 of them were displayed at Parliament of Victoria to represent just 10% of the homes urgently needed. This campaign urges a commitment to construct the required social homes and implement a 10-year national plan to end homelessness. How can you help? Today marks #WorldHomelessDay, an international day to advocate for solutions to ending homelessness. It's clear that more needs to be done to address the escalating homelessness crisis. English councils supported a staggering 358,370 homeless households in 2023/2024 - a rise of nearly 15% on the previous year - 324,990 of whom were owed a prevention or relief duty. Meanwhile, the number of people living in temporary accommodation in England is at an all-time high; in March 2024, the figure reached 117,450 households, including 151,630 children. As a founding member of the Homes for Cathy group, we're committed to maintaining a strong culture of homelessness prevention within the association and to fostering a better understanding of the needs of homeless people and their barriers to housing, together with a strong appetite to work internally and with external partners to offer solutions. Our work in the meeting the Homes for Cathy homelessness pledges touches on all areas of our operations, from building homes to care and supported housing and housing management. Read our 2023/24 Homes for Cathy report to find out about the policies, practices and services we are delivering to meet the needs of people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. https://lnkd.in/eDPgN6TX

“To make progress toward ending homelessness as we know it, we must close this revolving door and stop homelessness before it starts." ⭐ Did you know? Just this week, the US Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) adopted and released the first-ever federal framework on homelessness prevention. This framework outlines various methods of homelessness prevention, including prevention, diversion, and stabilization - all areas of Family Promise of Greater Wichita programming that seek to end family homelessness here in the our community! 👏👏You can support FPGW's prevention efforts (and have your impact DOUBLED right now!) by investing in these programs here: https://lnkd.in/gf99N-Yj 🧐You can read more about the USICH's framework here: https://lnkd.in/gUQ4f7Mf

United Way of Ventura County is meeting their community’s needs in a wide variety of ways, two of which are particularly relevant this November: National Homelessness Awareness Month: For more than four years, United Way of Ventura County’s Landlord Engagement Program has been helping those with federal housing choice vouchers navigate the housing market and secure housing, and earlier this year, they began homelessness prevention work. To date, they have helped 782 community members secure housing or stay housed. United Way of Ventura County also raises awareness about homelessness in their community and connects those experiencing homelessness to resources. https://lnkd.in/eDFXTgVJ Native American and Indigenous Peoples' Heritage Month: As Ventura County is home to more than 20,000 Indigenous people, United Way of Ventura County made sure their free tax preparation outreach and services were available in languages commonly spoken by Indigenous peoples in their community: Spanish, Mixteco, and Zapoteco.

Today we kicked off Homelessness Week - ‘Homelessness Action Now’ by hosting an internal Haven Home Safe event discussing the challenges, misunderstandings and successes of working to support people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. In addition to being awestruck by the incredible work of our staff a few key action themes emerged: 💙 We cannot do this alone. Often the best client outcomes are the result of formal and informal partnerships and community support to deliver outcomes. 💙 Advocacy makes a difference. Our councils, state and federal governments are listening to us. We heard examples of community support resulting in change such as local planning permits changing to support homeless families. It is up to each of us to shout from the rooftops about issues that impact the communities we live in and to raise issues with government bodies working to make a difference. 💙 The current system (without access to sufficient social housing) is causing more trauma and delaying outcomes. While we wait to build more homes, we need some flexibility in how we (and other services) deliver support to people with complex needs. Despite the challenges, the passion and dedication of our staff could not be clearer. We are so proud of the work our staff do and taking the time to reflect on this was a great way to start Homelessness Week.
