Here at OMNI, we recognize that language is a powerful tool for furthering community reach, improving data quality, and demonstrating respect for the diverse, intersectional identities that exist within the communities that we and our clients serve. Language is ever-evolving, and as part of our own ongoing efforts at OMNI to center equity in our work, we sought to develop and document guidance around current best-practices related to inclusive language. We are excited to share our Inclusive Language Guide with others who are invested in supporting and connecting to others through respectful language! Using inclusive language helps diverse communities feel heard, seen, and valued, and yields clearer, more reliable data. Some key categories addressed within include ableism, gender diversity, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, mental health, and body size. The guide is a living document that will continue to provide guidance on where and how to replace outdated or stigmatizing terms with neutral and affirming alternatives.
