Welcome to a brief introduction to TRLs. TRLs were designed by NASA in the 1970’s as a tool for describing the maturity of emerging technologies. It became a fantastic shorthand to describe the current state, risks, targets, and velocity especially when technical staff were presenting to non-technical parties. TRLs consist of a nine-point scale that are often grouped into three phases; research, development, and deployment. The definition of each level sets the overall goal and acceptance criteria for each stage of a project. The goal is to keep a low "Reynolds" number - a low number means the airflow is mostly a laminar flow (smooth paths) and a high number means turbulent flow, like above the engines in the video. Engineers have tried to smooth the flow by adding air guides like engine nacelle strakes, chines, and vortex generators (they make a huge difference), but the image really makes you wonder if we need a complete redesign! Maybe design aircraft again with really tall landing gear like B757 so we can hang the engines a little lower. Try wing-embedded engines again (they tried these in the past. They were a maintenance nightmare, but now we have better tech to create slide-out engines?) Honda Aircraft Company built a business jet that has engines mounted above the wings to improve aerodynamics and quieter cabin. Unusual concept, but you can see why they tried it. Our project TRACER has been accepted into the REXUS program! TRACER researches transpiration cooling as a viable heat shield for a spacecraft and will launch an experiment with REXUS to realize this concept and gain data about this technology. The REXUS program is a German-Swedish research program led by DLR that allows students from Europe to launch experiments on a sounding rocket.
