As an animal health practitioner, a one health advocate and a risk communicator, sensitization and education on public health issues becomes inevitable to ignore. So here are some things to note about antibiotics; ⭐There are different classes of antibiotics and these classes each have different mechanisms of action against the microbes they work against. Some are either bacteriostatic or bacteriocidal. ⭐ The World Health Organization classifies antibiotics in to #AWaRe to serve as a tool to monitor Antimicrobial consumption (AMC) to optimize antimicrobial use (AMU) and curb Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) A- Access group; It represents the classes of antibiotics we are supposed to have access to at all times, they are mostly relatively affordable and are usually used to treat common infections. Wa - Watch group ; It represents classes of antibiotics that are of highest priority, critically used for specific and limited indications in human and veterinary health and are being carefully observed due to increasing resistance patterns. Re - Reserve group ; It represents classes of antibiotics that should only be used as a last resort when all other antibiotics in the access and watch groups have failed. (Note: Some Reserve group antibiotics are beginning to show resistance patterns too) ⭐ From the above, you should not be self medicating without prescription and supervision from a qualified medical personnel or vet. ⭐The 1st antibiotics #Penicillins was discovered in 1928 and the last class introduced in recent times, dates as far back as 1987. For over 20years there has been no new discoveries of new antibiotic classes to add to Reserve group antibiotics to make room for the few that have started showing resistance. ⭐ Scientists are beginning to look into the adaptation of bacteriocins as a promising substitute for resistant antibiotics for In Vivo treatments. I hope from my brief post, you've learnt a thing or two on AMR and antibiotics . To be continued ..... Let's handle antimicrobials with care by not abusing them, be it in humans, fisheries, pets or farmed food animals. #Onehealth #goodhealthandwellbeing #antimicrobialawareness #sdg3 #sdg17
