For Australian start-ups and scale-ups, international markets are looking increasingly appealing for growth. This makes sense considering we have such a rich diversity of products and brands on offer that have the potential to resonate with niche markets that may unlock a greater number of target buyers, especially when we're talking much larger populations like the UK/US or even India or China. According to Inside Retail, two in three Aussie brands are actually eyeing up offshore scaling (more on that here 👉🏻 https://lnkd.in/gheEb5ZZ). A great example is one of Australia's leading kombucha brands, Remedy. Remedy went to market in Hong Kong, the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam in 2020, and then also launched in China, Indonesia and the Middle East just 3 years later. In order to cater to Middle Eastern consumers, the brand was able to remove all traces of alcohol from its kombucha for this market - a fantastic innovation for a brand that was already offering a unique selling point: kombucha that can be stored both in and out of the fridge, offering customers convenience while also meaning it could have dual placement in retail stores to grab attention + shelf space. Remedy's success story is a reminder that if you've got a solidly unique product offering that can be flexed for localisation, international markets could be a lucrative option to consider. #scaling #startups #export

Mondelēz International pivots from an innovation hub to a corporate venture capital arm in its approach toward sourcing & growing new businesses The snacking giant closes SnackFutures and CoLab Program, which supported early-stage snack brands, replacing them with SnackFutures Ventures SnackFutures Ventures aims to invest in growth-stage companies with a market disruption potential. The key focus area will strategic investments in businesses generating at least $20m NR and positive EBITDA and/ or relevant capabilities and technologies (mostly food tech/ supply chain). HungryPanda Ltd 熊猫外卖 bridging cultures with authentic Asian cuisine through $55M expansion HungryPanda Ltd 熊猫外卖, a food delivery platform founded in London and tailored to the Chinese and Asian diaspora, has raised $55M in new funding at an estimated valuation of $500M. The company, founded by Eric Liu in 2017, connects over 6.5 million customers with 100,000 merchants and 80,000 riders across 80 cities in 10 countries. This fresh round will support its growth into new verticals like grocery delivery, acquisitions, and AI-powered operational enhancements. This is another positive market signal after the Covid-induced hype and extreme Foodtech valuations, followed by a sharp correction post-pandemic. Foodtech delivery is making a comeback! Other positive signals include the recent funding round of German Q-commerce player Flink and Czech player Rohlik Group. Additionally, Talabat is preparing for a sawdropping IPO in the Dubai Financial Market, aiming for a $15 billion valuation, surpassing its parent company, Delivery Hero, currently valued at $11.5 billion. In 2023, talabat posted strong numbers with $6.1 billion GMV and $194 million in ad revenue, positioning itself ahead of its competitors. HungryPanda’s journey began with Liu’s experience as a student at the University of Nottingham, where he found it difficult to order authentic Chinese food due to language barriers and menu adaptations to local tastes. His solution? A Chinese-language app designed to bridge the gap between Asian expats and traditional cuisine.
