After a marathon of high-intensity development over the past few months, the National Science Foundation (NSF) CO-WY Engine has officially launched our new grant program. This inaugural program supports Colorado and Wyoming-based research and development teams and startups around climate resiliency technologies. The Innosphere team started this journey in March when we were awarded funding by the National Science Foundation (NSF), and by July, we had: ✍️Designed the Program: Creating a clear and effective process, from the application website to forming a Research and Development Advisory Board. 🤝Secured NSF Approval: Collaborating with NSF to ensure every step is aligned with their standards for creating real impact. 🚀Launched the Program: Announcing the opportunity, reviewing applications, and selecting awardees - all in just a few short months. From designing every detail to receiving approval and executing it, the rapid timeline highlights the strength of our team and the trust NSF placed in us. I’d like to extend a big thanks to the National Science Foundation (NSF) for prioritizing this initiative and helping us move quickly. Applications for the next wave of grants will open early next year. Here’s to what’s ahead!

Well Rhema Vaithianathan, you saw this coming or maybe you gave them the idea! The Government has cut humanities and social science from the Marsden Fund. That's a major move. Having worked at the Royal Society for ten years, I can imagine the major ramifications this has practically and spiritually for that organisation, which is very much set up as a place that supports the various fields of sciences, social science, and humanities - and the interaction between them. They will likely continue to do so, but face the prospect of administering a fund on behalf of the government that cuts a swathe of their constituents and members out of the loop when it comes to actually funding their research. Marsden is no longer the country's key blue skies research fund, but will be used for the purposes of pursuing growth and economic development. Wow. This reaction from Professor Nicola Gaston via the Science Media Centre sort of sums it up... "I am horrified by today’s announcement. I am absolutely disgusted by the way that the kind of science I, and my colleagues do – as physical scientists involved in research that is purposeful, focused on solutions to climate and sustainability challenges, that do have real economic value – is being weaponised against our colleagues in the humanities and the social sciences. "The work that our colleagues in the humanities and social sciences do is incredibly important. We can do all the work in developing clean technologies we want, but if we don’t understand the barriers to people purchasing that tech? It becomes useless."

Take Action: https://lnkd.in/ePQgRCN8 The goal is to not allow the proposed cut to the NSF and other science funding agencies to move forward. On May 16, the House Appropriations Committee announced top line numbers for fiscal year 2025. Defense funding is to increase by 1%, and non-defense funding is to be cut by 6%. The cuts will affect the agencies that fund our research and support our students. The NSF, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, Department of Education, and National Institutes of Health all fund programs critical for supporting the work of mathematical scientists and our students on university and college campuses. Fiscal year 2024 budget has not been kind to the NSF and we are already seeing cuts to programs we care about. As just one example, the number of Graduate Research Fellowships fell from 2554 (across all fields) in 2023, to 2036 awards in 2024. In math, the award numbers are 102 and 83. We must push back against further cuts in 2025. It only takes about a minute.
