📌In January 2024, Jacques Vandenschrik was nominated ad personam by the European Commission to join the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of EU #Agriculture. This was unique in bringing together diverse voices in the agri-food sector, who engaged in meaningful discussions and embraced a shared purpose. 🦺As FEBA we call on all stakeholders to enable #FoodBanks and other non-profit organisations to maximize their role and to propose measures to safeguard food affordability for lower income consumer segments through social and fiscal policies. 🚚 Those policies could include financial support targeted specifically at lower-income households. Beyond that the removal of VAT on food donations is essential in encouraging donations to Food Banks and other social organisations, distributing food for free to their beneficiaries. 🤝Beyond this we also recognize the opportunities for Food Banks and non-profit as well as social organisations distributing food for free to people in need in becoming an integral part in the transition of the food system, creating a more united and meaningful Europe. We are proud to share that our Community Carveries have raised £65,000 for The Trussell Trust through the sale of Too Good To Go ‘Magic Bags’! 🙌✨ Our partnerships with the Trussell Trust and Too Good To Go are immensely important to us, helping us to support our communities in multiple different ways 💚The Trussell Trust is an anti-poverty charity who support a nationwide network of more than 1,300 food bank centres, providing emergency food and practical support to people who can’t afford the things we all need in life. Whilst Too Good To Go is an app-based solution to food waste, selling surplus food to customers at a reduced price and ultimately reducing the environmental impact of food waste. We are thrilled to have saved over 50,000 meals with Too Good To Go so far, with all revenue (minus packaging costs) donated to the Trussell Trust. Over 3 million tonnes of food wasted across the food industry each year is good-to-eat when it’s discarded. That good-to-eat wasted food is enough for an estimated 7 billion meals. Astonishing figures that inspired a team of employee volunteers from Motorpoint to help a Nottingham charity that works with local supermarkets to redistribute surplus food to small charities, schools & community groups. It was an eye opening day for the team, seeing the shear scale of food that came in one door and later, being caged, sorted and weighed to go out of another door to local charities that help people in real need. Employee volunteering can take you to places & introduce you to new people. It adds value to your life, widens your horizons and brings you closer to issues in your own community. The Big Food Project If you haven't heard of this incredible charity, they collect food from supermarkets, wholesalers, and manufacturers that would otherwise go to waste. This food is then distributed to more than 100 food banks across The Fylde, helping those in need and crisis. Their vision is to create communities where everyone has access to nutritious food and no food goes to waste. Through The Big Food Project and The Big Food Truck, in partnership with Blackpool Food Bank, they rescue surplus, nutritious food and redistribute it to over 14,000 people each month via their network of 80+ partner organisations on the Fylde Coast. In the UK, a staggering amount of fresh produce is wasted on farms each year, despite still being perfectly good to eat. This comes at a time when food insecurity has doubled in just three years, now affecting over 13 million people. FareShare's network helps to alleviate this crisis, providing much-needed fresh produce to community organisations, including homelessness shelters, afterschool clubs, and lunch clubs for older people. Since its partnership with FareShare began in 2017, fresh produce giant G's has provided the equivalent of four million meals, supporting thousands of UK charities and helping feed millions of people in need. 🌟 Fantastic News for Tackling Food Poverty! 🌟 We’re thrilled to share that the UK government has announced a £15 million fund to help redistribute surplus food from farms to the people who need it most. This is a huge step forward in tackling food waste and supporting communities across the country. This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without years of dedication from FareShare UK and The Felix Project. Together, we’ve shown how surplus food redistribution can tackle food poverty, reduce waste, and deliver social and environmental benefits. This fund is a testament to the power of collaboration across sectors to drive meaningful change. Every year, around 330,000 tonnes of edible food are wasted or used as animal feed before leaving farms—food that could create millions of meals. This funding will ensure more of that surplus food reaches food banks, charities, homeless shelters, and community groups, where it can make a real difference to people’s lives. At FareShare Yorkshire, we see this impact firsthand. Last year, we redistributed over 1,700 tonnes of surplus food, which equates to more than 4 million meals for people facing food insecurity in our region. By working closely with farmers, this fund will help us scale up our efforts, ensuring even more healthy, nutritious food reaches those in need.
