It was one of the very moving moments at yesterday’s event “Europe's Beating Cancer Plan - Joining Forces” when #Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides joined the Irish cancer survivors’ choir “Sea of change” on stage. However, although a lot more is being done in terms of European health funding to work together and bring hope to patients in #Europe, it’s still not enough. About 40% of #cancer cases in the EU are preventable, yet according to a report published yesterday only around 5% of total health spending was dedicated to #prevention in the EU Member States in 2021. Vaccination against #hpv and #hepatitis B is part of these much needed efforts and therefore the related Recommendation of the #europeancommission which was published yesterday is a step into the right direction. #EUCancerPlan #HealthUnion

🔍What is the relationship between skin immune cells and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (#CRPS)? 🌟 New study by Hartmannsberger et al. from Heike Lydia Rittner lab. 🧬 Key findings: CRPS patients, show normal nerve fiber and Schwann cell densities in the skin. In acute CRPS, there's an increase of mast and Langerhans cells, indicating immune activation. This normalizes in chronic cases. 💡 What this means: The immune system's role in CRPS is complex and varies over time. Interesting finding: Purinergic receptors for ATP are well-known to be involved in various essential PMN defence activities, including chemotaxis, phagocytosis, respiratory burst, migration, adherence, degranulation, and apoptotic mechanisms. PMN chemotaxis is modulated by extracellular ATP through P2Y2 receptors, whereas binding to P2Y receptors facilitates PMN attachment to active endothelium. We here show that the ATP purinergic receptor P2X1 plays a pivotal role in  C. parvum -induced suicidal NETosis since its inhibition by NF449 considerably blocks this defence mechanism. Thanks to the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) for championing this important legislation that aims to enhance patient access to multi-cancer early detection tests (MCED) when they show effectiveness and are FDA-approved. We at Providence are committed to the equitable delivery to world class cancer care from prevention and early detection to treatment and survivorship. As the first U.S. health system to partner with GRAIL, eligible patients at Providence’s 51 hospitals and 900 clinics across seven states have access to GRAIL’s Galleri® MCED test, as part of a comprehensive range of health services. In clinical studies, Galleri has demonstrated the ability to detect signals across more than 50 types of cancers — more than 45 of which lack recommended screening tests today. The potential for such a test is that when a cancer signal is detected, a physician or other health provider can then help ascertain if and where in the body the cancer is located, all from a single blood draw. In addition to broadening access to MCED testing, this partnership and others like it in development, supports innovative diagnostics and genomics research aimed at improving cancer screening and treatment.
