Many of our endurance sports enthusiasts may experience Atrial Fibrillation (A-fib). We discussed A-fib and heart health in general in endurance athletes on the latest episode of the Athlete's Compass Podcast. Tune in below or check it out on your favorite podcast platform. It's no secret that as a lifelong endurance athlete, we ask a lot of our hearts. Yes, being active and doing sports IS and continues to be important to our health, and you can stay active even with A-fib (sorry, no hall pass and permission to become a coach potato from me). Recognizing any issues with your heart should not be taken lightly. You should always consult your GP (or another doctor if yours doesn't take you seriously) if you experience fluttering, dizziness, or weakness. I appreciate hearing Paul Warloski's first-hand experience and his realization that something was wrong when he was dropped on a regular group ride. As a woman in my mid-life years, I am cognizant of my vulnerability to cardiovascular disease as I approach menopause. Although men may suffer from CVD earlier in life than women, the risk increases substantially after menopause. CVD is the leading cause of death for women as well. It is thought that estrogen has a protective effect on heart health for women. This area of research, looking into how female hormones (predominantly estrogen's protective effect on heart health) has been growing for the last 20 years. I am excited to dig into the research and hopefully bring endurance athletic endeavors in perimenopause, menopause, and beyond into future discussions.
