What just happened?! 👀 Last week, New Zealand’s Parliament was briefly suspended after Māori MPs performed a haka in protest against a controversial bill that seeks to reinterpret the Treaty of Waitangi. Signed in 1840, the Treaty established a governance framework between the British Crown and Māori chiefs, and its clauses continue to influence laws today. The proposed bill, introduced by the ACT New Zealand Party, aims to narrow the interpretation of the Treaty, a move critics argue would undermine Māori rights. Many Māori and supporters view this as a setback in their fight for justice and equality. The International Day of the World’s Indigenous People on August 9 pays tribute to the indigenous communities of the world. The latest data reveals that there are about 370 to 500 million indigenous people living in 90 countries. These communities are noted to have their own unique set of languages, traditions, cultures, and governing systems. For many indigenous groups, the systems that their ancestors have followed for centuries have stood the test of time by serving them with positive outcomes to date. Many indigenous people’s special bond and connection with nature have also led to the protection of the general environment. However, on the other side, several indigenous communities face difficulties due to a central government’s covert and overt attempts to control their lives. This has led to indigenous people’s rights violations where they would have otherwise ensured peaceful and harmonious lives for them. #InternationalDayOfTheWorldsIndigenousPeoples #IndigenousPeoplesDay

A Remarkable Story Of Courage On November 14, 2024, in the New Zealand Parliament, Hana-Rawhiti of Te Pati Mãori made history-not just as the youngest member of Parliament at 22 years old, but as a powerful advocate for the rights of her people. During a debate on the Treaty of Waitangi Amendment Bill, which threatens to undermine key protections for Mãori under New Zealand's founding docu-ment, Hana-Rawhiti boldly performed the traditional Mãori haka, a powerful and sacred symbol of resistance, identity, and heritage. The haka is more than a performance; it's a profound expression of Mãori pride and resilience, rooted in centuries of tradition. What made this moment even more striking was its unifying impact. As she began, members of Parliament- including those of British descent, stood in recognition of its national importance. The proposed bill, introduced by Simon Seymour, aims to universalize the treaty's rights in a way that risks eroding the specific protections for the Maori community. It sheds light on the ongoing struggles faced by indigenous communities. For instance, the Foreshore and Seabed Act of 2004 unfairly transferred ownership of coastal rights away from Mãori to the Crown-a painful reminder of colonial legacies.
