New peer-reviewed research shows that California’s nation-leading restrictions on PFAS in consumer products reduced the population’s body levels for many dangerous compounds linked to cancer, birth defects, reproductive harm and other serious health issues. Read more: https://bit.ly/3AX5DdW

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a proposed rule under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) to safeguard public health and protect consumers and workers, with this latest proposal focused on the solvent 1-bromopropane (1-BP). Exposure to this chemical can cause serious health effects such as skin, lung, and intestinal cancer; damage to the liver, kidneys, and nervous system; and effects on the reproductive systems that lead to reduced fertility. If finalized, the rule would prohibit all but one consumer use of 1-BP, as well as some workplace uses. https://lnkd.in/gGVhvswF

PFAS chemicals can enter our bodies and bloodstreams in different ways, but one of the most common ways is through the water we drink. We test water samples for #PFAS at our laboratory to help homeowners and businesses make informed decisions about the safety of their water. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is still assessing #PFAS chemicals, but so far, they report that peer-reviewed scientific studies show these chemicals are linked to the following health issues: ➡️ Reproductive effects in pregnant #women ➡️ Developmental effects or delays in #children ➡️ Increased risk of some cancers ➡️ Reduced ability of the body’s immune system to fight infections ➡️ Interference with the body’s natural hormones ➡️ Increased cholesterol levels and/or risk of obesity Protecting your family from harmful contaminants in your drinking water that may lead to #health concerns like these starts with a test.

"Researchers have linked exposure to PFAS to testicular and kidney cancers, developmental delays in children, decreased fertility, liver damage and thyroid disease. The man-made chemicals are so long-lasting that scientists haven’t been able to reliably identify how long it might take for them to break down." To quote the superlative Carol B. Muller: “I am particularly appreciative for the work of the Green Science Policy Institute, a key organization in bringing together science and policymakers to address this major, long-term health problem (you can get their helpful newsletter here: greensciencepolicy.org).” https://lnkd.in/gV-rYS_Z #globalhealth #PFAS #foreverchemicals #sciencepolicy #plastics

As a Member of the European Parliament Ι am proud to support the Milano Declaration, recognising vital role hormones play in our health. In my role as Rapporteur on behalf of the European Parliament on #CLP Regulation (Classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures) we have enhanced consumer protection by banning endocrine disrupters (EDs), harmful substances that can "mimic" natural hormones, disrupting their normal function. This is crucial as these chemicals can harm humans and animals by affecting their hormonal systems. Ensuring a safe environment is a top priority on the European health agenda. Together, let’s create a safer world for all! European Society of Endocrinology #MilanoDeclaration #BecauseHormonesMatter #EuropeanHormoneDay

🎅 #ToxicChemicals are on the naughty list this #Christmas! ❌ However, a 2023 study by the Danish Consumer Council THINK, in collaboration with organisations across the EU, found them in 60% of children’s products tested! 🤒 Children are more vulnerable to harmful chemicals as they’re still developing. Childhood exposure to some harmful chemicals has been linked to numerous negative health impacts, including impairment of reproductive functioning and increased risks of obesity and diabetes. 🧸 Avoid buying children soft plastic toys this #Christmas and opt for solid wood instead, if painted, look for water-based, non-toxic paints. Children’s exposure to toxins: Over the past half-century, childhood cancer in the United States is up 35%. Pediatric asthma has tripled. And pediatric obesity has quadrupled. Why? An article published in The New England Journal of Medicine points a finger at the estimated 350,000 synthetic chemicals and plastics that permeate the planet. Production has expanded 50-fold since 1950, is currently increasing by about 3% per year, and is projected to triple by 2050. Fewer than 20% have been tested for toxicity, and fewer still for toxic effects in infants and children. As it stands, she said, manufacturers are under no obligation to test chemicals for safety before they reach the market — or even justify the need for those chemicals. Too often, toxicity data is hidden from the public under “trade secrets” claims improperly granted by the EPA. Does anyone think the victim’s families might turn to litigation? Numerous jurisdictions allow limits stacking over policy years for policies written on an occurrence basis. #insurance #underwriting #insuranceindustry #reinsurance

The tipping point for PFAS has arrived. Wait until toxicologists establish links to childhood cancers and neurological disorders. The dam of blind public acceptance will break and the everyday citizen will demand more action. “We already know that high levels of exposure to PFAS have been linked to disastrous health impacts like birth defects, liver damage and many kinds of cancer. Yet the rate at which PFAS are being released into the environment far outpaces toxicologists’ ability to study their consequences for human health. Some 31 percent of groundwater samples in places with no known source of PFAS have shown contamination levels that exceed E.P.A. limits. And in some locations with established sources, like military and industrial sites, the levels of PFAS are far higher than the standard set by the new rule.” #pfas #foreverchemicals

The biggest reason to stay out of the EU is it's size and how corrupted it is becoming. The EU is turning into a tool for big buisiness at the cost of consumers and the planet. The EU needs very public continous internal reviews performed by every single member state, with complete transparancy and extreme scrutiny.
Ever heard of #PFAS, aka forever chemicals that are in pretty much everybody's body and can lead to fertility issues, obesity and cancers? Turns out, the EU is working on a proposal to restrict them! But guess who's working hard behind the scenes using every lobbying trick in the book to weaken the proposal? PFAS producers and users of course! A new report by Corporate Europe Observatory found that the industry significantly increased its lobbying budget and capacity, hires law firms to share "legal briefings" with decision makers, writes "impact assessments" that look independent but are actually tweaking the truth to fear monger and encourages partners to "advocate for derogations". And it seems to be working! While a few years ago, the European Commission was dead set on working towards a "toxic free future" and phasing out PFAS in Europe unless proven essential to society, the ambition has now been reduced to "achieving clarity" on PFAS. This proposal, if ambitious enoug, would be a game changer for our health and the environment, time the Commission resists pressure from the industry. #BanPFAS
