Hi, it’s been a minute! And wow, do I have a lot of updates. First off, yes, we’re still building brands and working with the coolest people to solve meaningful problems on a daily. But aside from business as usual… We’ve entered the Web3 space 👾 Yes, THAT Web3 — home of crypto bros, Bitcoin, and other fun associations. But, obviously, that’s not why we’re here. Most of what we do lies at the intersection of technology and being human, so staying on top of innovations and trends is crucial. I still remember watching my first YouTube video on blockchain years ago. It sort of made sense… but also didn’t. I tried diving into it a few more times over the years, but it always felt too complicated and overwhelming, so I left it for “later.” Maybe you’re in the same boat. Breakthrough innovations, like the blockchain, are often met with resistance. They feel uncomfortable and even scammy, mostly because we don’t fully understand them, and scam stories make the best headlines. And yet, through all the hype cycles, frenzies, and inevitable cool-downs—it’s still here, evolving every day. As confused as I was, I knew I had to lean in. So, in July, together with Anna, our brilliant and equally adventurous head designer at andhuman, we attended our first Web3 conference, EthCC, in Brussels. Two months later, we found ourselves in Singapore for TOKEN2049, meeting more incredible founders and learning more about the technology. As a geek who loves learning, you’ll find me always exploring new things. And with every new experience, I feel like a slightly new person. But the Web3 experience was a whole different ball game. It felt like an entirely new planet. While we’ve learned more about Web3 itself (more on this later), what left the biggest impact on me was discovering a new version of myself as a small part of this previously unknown to me culture and community. 🎉 Happy Giving Day! 🐻 Giving Day is a 24 hour period at Cornell where clubs and organizations raise money from alumni, family, and others who support their cause. Who are we❓ Cornell University is a leader in the blockchain community, from alumni founders of organizations such as Avalanche, Ribbon Finance, Tezos, and Cosmos Tendermint, to the development of IC3, the leading academic consortium in the field. In 2022, Cornell was ranked #2 in the nation as a university to study blockchain. Our Club aims to democratize Web3 awareness and help catalyze real-world use cases of Blockchain technology. Back in 2017, formal blockchain education was primarily reserved for technical, graduate-level students. Cornell Blockchain founders saw this kind of exclusivity to be antithetical to the concept of blockchain technology, also serving as a stark obstacle to adoption. We believe that the first step to do this is by building awareness and education around the technology in a neutral, intimidating, and unstigmatized way. What do we do❓ Our three main focus areas are education, project teams, and our conference. We have taught over 200+ undergrad students in our for-credit courses: CS1998: Introduction to Blockchain, and CS4998: Blockchain Development. We also conducted the first ever blockchain course sponsored by NYC Department of Education, Mayor of New York City, & Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation. Our five project teams work on consulting, accelerator, trading, governance, research, and engineering hands-on projects. Lastly, our annual conference last year attracted over 800 industry leaders, top academics, passionate students, investors, and regulators. We have successfully hosted three conferences and we plan on leveraging our success over the past years to make the 2024 annual conference even better, by reaching out to broader industry professionals and diverse leaders. In May 2023 we kicked off our pilot Decentrathon, a hackathon like no other, in Kazakhstan. We gathered 2000 blockchain developers and engineers across 12 cities, offering a $10,000 prize fund from BNB Chain Innovation But the real prize? Watching young talent bloom. A team of 15-16 year-olds from Pavlodar — a place not exactly known for tech — came together to solve one of the toughest tasks on BNB Greenfield. It was their first-ever hackathon and they nailed it. “Talent has no boundaries.” That’s what these young developers showed us — whether from big cities or small towns, the passion for innovation is everywhere. ⚙️ But Decentrathon is more than just a hackathon—it’s a decentralized movement. Our multivenue format allows us to tap into creative minds from every corner of Kazakhstan, whether it’s university students or budding tech enthusiasts. I just returned from the Encode London Conference and Hackathon, co-hosted with the Cambridge and Oxford Blockchain Societies, and it was an amazing experience! Over the course of this event, I had the pleasure of joining my friends from the Queen Mary, University of London Computer Science Society. Together, we tackled multiple hackathon bounties (projects) for cash prizes, combining our skills and collaborating together for a chance to win. In addition to the hands-on work, we attended insightful conferences and hackathon workshops which showcased some of the world’s leading research in AI and blockchain technology. Featured in these were inspiring talks from speakers representing renowned institutions such as the Alan Turing Institute, JPMorgan, and Nillion to name a few. Most of all, I really enjoyed meeting new people and networking at this event. Being able to connect with all sorts of people from a wide range of diverse backgrounds is one of the things that I love most about living in London. Each conversation, whether it was about each other’s projects, advice from experts or just small talk, it all made this experience that much more valuable and inspiring. A massive thank you to the organisers and sponsors for this event as it has been an unforgettable experience and congratulations to the winners of the hackathon bounties! Since this was my first attended hackathon and technology event, I am very excited to go to more as my career progresses. Goals for next time: ▪️Submit a project.
