Is there a better feeling than the buzz from a good deed? OnePoll’s latest research for Frank and Teremana discovered the buzz from doing a good deed lasts for four hours. Our poll of 2,000 adults found they typically carry out 223 selfless acts a year. We found that opening doors for others, taking in packages for neighbours and giving directions were the most common good deeds. Others include donating to charity, giving up a seat on public transport and making a tradesperson a cup of tea. 40% said their motivations for spreading kindness were because they want to make others feel good. Carrying out good deeds make 82% of those polled feel positive. It also emerged 46% believe there’s “too much” negativity in the UK at the moment, with 54% saying ‘not enough’ people carry out good deeds. The human spirit finds its greatest expression in acts of compassion and altruism. Giving back to the community is more than just a moral obligation; it's a profound journey of human connection and growth. When we extend a helping hand, we create a ripple effect that reverberates through society. Our generosity inspires others to follow suit, fostering a culture of empathy and cooperation. By donating to charities or volunteering our time, we contribute to the betterment of our communities and uplift those in need. But the benefits of giving extend far beyond those we directly assist. Acts of kindness have a profound impact on our well-being. Volunteering has been linked to increased happiness, reduced stress, and a stronger sense of purpose. It's a reminder that true fulfillment lies not in accumulating possessions, but in enriching the lives of others. Ready to make an impact? Here are three simple ways to give back to those in need. 1. Donate money: Consider giving to organizations that support causes close to you. Every dollar makes an impact. 2. Volunteer time: Whether it's at local shelters or community events, giving back with our time can be just as rewarding as giving financially. 3. Spread kindness: Small acts like holding the door open or complimenting someone can go far in brightening someone's day. Let's make the world better together through giving back. #GiveBack #MakeADifference #SpreadKindness. #garagedoors #garagedoorrepair #garagedooropener

One of the major reasons people hesitate to become living donors is the financial burden it can impose. 💸 In many cases, donors worry about the loss of income during their recovery period. However, some states have laws that require employers to provide paid leave for living donors. This support can make a significant difference and encourage more people to consider this life-saving act. 🌟 If you're thinking about donating, check if your state has such protections in place. It might be the support you need to take this incredible step. For those in states without these laws, let's advocate for change and make living donation more accessible for everyone. Additionally, we will be sharing some financial resources in the comments that can help you before and after you donate an organ.❤️ #LivingDonation #FinancialSupport #Advocacy #BeTheChange #LivingDonorSupport

Great day at the Legacy Strategy Summit today - interesting speakers and discussions. My key takeaways from the day are: 💥 Internal engagement is key to successful legacy fundraising in any size of charity. Consider all supporter touchpoints and make sure that legacy messaging is dripping through. Make sure all staff are comfortable talking about legacies, even if that is just to say "we gratefully accept gifts in Wills". 💥 There are more & more contested Wills - make sure your free wills offerings are fit for purpose and won't be contested. You need to believe in the integrity of the scheme you champion - would you encourage your own family member to use the scheme? 💥 Use your words carefully with legacy supporters, and families of legators. A genuine, bespoke thank you goes a long way, but don't assume to know how anyone is feeling, especially the family of someone who has left a legacy. Empathy not sympathy! #legacyfundraising #giftsinwills #legacystrategysummit

"Empowerment Through Employment: Building Dignity Beyond Charity" True greatness lies not in giving charity, but in creating lasting opportunities for others. Charity can provide temporary relief, but sustainable impact comes from empowering individuals to earn their livelihoods with dignity. Employment not only helps people become self-reliant, but also fosters a sense of respect, purpose, and pride. By creating jobs, we enable individuals to build a better future for themselves and their families, breaking cycles of dependency and paving the way for a stronger, more resilient society. #EmpowermentNotCharity #DignityThroughEmployment #OpportunityForAll #BuildingSelfReliance #SustainableImpact #RespectfulUpliftment #JobsForDignity #CreateOpportunities

I have always thought government funding is a double-edged sword. I’m not saying a charity should never accept government funding but if you do advocacy, want to influence public policy or are a faith-based non-profit then your voice is going to be affected or silenced or you will run up against opposing values when receiving government funding. In my early days as a fundraiser, I would frequently suggest producing fundraising appeals where we would challenge government policy as part of the messaging. This was never accepted on the basis that “it will affect our relationships with XX government department from whom we receive funding”. I always thought this was crazy especially when government policy was partly or largely responsible for a rise in demand for services or imminent non-profit budget problems. Like the time the government slashed foreign aid funding to its lowest ever levels (and that has never been completely restored regardless of which party was in power). Or the ongoing lack of adequate government action on affordable social housing which is contributing to a rise in homelessness. Or the woefully inadequate investment into the country's mental health epidemic. Or the posturing and fudging around environmental laws that would save endangered species. I could go on but you get the idea. Such issues lend themselves to advocacy fundraising (which I would LOVE to do more of) but I never bother suggesting it any more because non-profits just won't do it because they fear the risk of losing a funding source. I understand in many cases that government funding is a big proportion of a non-profit's funding model. But there are instances where a charity would do well to try reducing its reliance on government funding in order to have a stronger public voice. It's also good risk management - I've been called in on several occasions by a panicked charity desperate to raise funds because their government funding was allocated elsewhere that year, often leaving a budget hole in the hundreds of thousands if not millions. Just because you get government funding one year doesn't mean you'll get it the year after.

I heard a CEO recently at a charity conference advise us to not be critical of the Federal Government publicly, as to do so would jeopardise their chance at funding. My question is what is the cost of that silence? What is the purpose of that funding or even the existence of us as charities if it’s not to change the very systems that create this inequality in the first place we see at our doors. That is rarely possible without public advocacy and campaigning. Also disheartening was the inability to imagine thriving as a charity without Federal Government funding. And not understanding the incredible impact and influence you can have when you are independent. With my team we have built what is now a $25 million a year charity without a dollar of Federal Government funding. I encourage other CEOs to imagine a different vision and way.
