Here is some questions you should ask before buying a new UPS system to get the best in market. ( There are more but I will just hit on a few. Scr or IGBT RECTIFER Ask your provider or multiple the following: 1. Is your new UPS USING THE LATEST GENERATION OF IGBTS? There are currently three popular generations being used with each generation having improved efficiency and better power capabilities. The three are 5th. 6th and 7th generation with 8th generation around the corner. The 8th generation will have up to 30 percent more efficiency! 2.Ask how long does a power module life is rated for and the current cost for a replacement. (get a truer cost of ownership over the life! )prices can vary. 3. Where are parts manufactured? (remember the pandemic and the long delays .Image what hostility in regions can cause). 4. Look at capacitors. Are they replaceable? Both AC and DC. Most OEMs will have DC caps in a Power module . They will an assembly. ( dc caps soldered on a board that is not replaceable except as full Piwer module. Costing end user more. How are the capacitors laid out in modules? Do they have cooling that can extend life. Are the positioned vertical or horizontal ( on their side) as caps age drying out electrolytes caps can have issues when on sides. This is usually a design thing. 5. Are they using Fiber Optic cables ? Less noise issue. But how is the design? Are there any sharp bends that the cable has to do? What is the termination of Fiver cable? Over time there has been issues with a few OEMs that have used poorer connections causing more limited use and higher cost to maintain. 6. Where are they in the life of the product? Are you getting that model that production will be stopping next year and the count down support will start upon installation? (usually in a data center buying and startups can be 6-12 months.) 7. Capacity for growth. Yes some can have growth they saw you can add later, but you must plan on that growth with the sizing of the switchgear, breakers and I!O cabinets and Static Switch.(often if not bought in the design most can not be upgraded later ). 8. Voltage range 9. DC bus? Will it be compatible with all technology? Lead,Lithium,Nickle Zinc, and sodium? Flywheels? 10. Software? Is it upgraded only by OEM? Can adjustments to voltages be done thru the machine with proper password or does it have to have external software? Say in five years you decide you want to change the batteries to a different manufacturer which has the same capability but have a different requirements can you do it yourself or do you have to have OEM with external program? Will they lease a copy of software to end user and provide training so a properly trained end user or rep may be able to recalibrate and turn off maintenance notices?(a battery notice after 5 years even after battery changed out may require an OEM TO RESET THE TIMER THRU EXTERNAL SOFTWARE costing thousands) UNIFIED POWER can help you. You’ll absolutely love your uninterruptible power supply when it works as needed. But, if you don’t give it any love when it’s not needed, the system may not work properly -- or at all. This is why routine maintenance is crucial, and it has to involve these six tasks:
