Change often happens slowly, then suddenly. The consequences of technology and change passing us by are not being able to define ourselves and missing the transitions. The consequences are always catastrophic. One of my favorite quotes is JFK “for time and the world do not stand still. Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” The newest lesson is RedBox. As a 90s kid, we spent most Fridays at blockbuster or a red box. Although in decline for years, Redbox was founded in 2002 and had over 42,000 kiosks with 52% of the rental market share. The leaders were late adopters as they believed they had more time to develop digital services. In a world of constant disruption, sustainable success requires us to pay attention and constantly pivot. #retail #innovation #change #technology https://lnkd.in/gVR42-w5

Home phones changed Hollywood. And it's a lesson you need in your business. Of the top 200 movies ever in terms of number of tickets sold, about 10 of them were released before 1990. What happened in 1990? It got easier to find out when a movie was playing near you. Moviefone hit the scene in 1989. You call a number, enter your zip code, and get showtimes for your local theater. Before that you had to hopefully get someone on the phone at your local theater or read showtimes in the paper. Complicated. And frustrating too. Once it was easier to buy, people bought more. This is a principle for every business. People don't buy if the purchasing process is complicated. How often do you use "Buy Now with 1-Click" on Amazon instead of "Add to Cart"? When we give people what they need to make a buying decision, they buy. Hollywood hadn't figured this out. People can't buy tickets if they don't know showtimes. When you simplify the buying process, more people buy more often. #marketing #sales

The “Building Up with Community” Curve: When we first started dreaming up Tidal Vape’s new Reading store, they told us… Why would you open another location? The market is already saturated. It’ll never work. Oh, they’re just a small-time shop. They’ll never last long. But we believed in our community, our team, and our vision. Fast forward to today—our doors are open, and things are changing. Now, they say… Wow, I’ve heard great things about Tidal Vape. Hey, can’t wait to check out the new store! Let’s meet up, I’d love to learn how you built this! How did you guys pull this off? And the best part? People are now asking to join our team. This journey wasn’t just about opening another store. It was about building something meaningful together. A place where the community can come, where we focus on quality, customer care, and innovation. We are stronger than ever, and we’re just getting started. Stop by our new Reading store—see for yourself what we’ve been working towards! We’re beyond excited, and we couldn’t have done it without you. #NewStoreOpening #ReadingUK #ShopLocal #SupportLocal #Community #UK #Growth #Success #PersonalGrowth

Some of you are old enough to remember that there was such a thing as a video rental store. Those who don’t remember such businesses (or perhaps didn’t know such strange things existed) certainly knew of Redbox’s existence. But they may not have known that the parent company for this once booming business recently declared Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. It might be useful to see how this once-successful business didn’t go out with a bang, but with a whimper. Whatever Happened to Redbox? https://bit.ly/3Cxc3Rm

We pulled out of all 3 deals this week And are back to square 1. All for different reasons but we decided that the 3 deals at/around the LOI Didn’t make sense for us. Now it’s back to rebuilding the pipeline. A set back, but all part of the game. On the Buying a Biz: * 6 Calls (2 Deals, 2 partners, 1 vendor, 1 netwokring) * Passed on 3 deals this week. * 1 Fresh deal hit my inbox. On the Media Side: * 10 LinkedIn posts hit 92k Views * LinkedIn newsletter is live. 2,139 people joined in week 1!! * 4k subs rode along for our teardown of Overstock. * Launching a website! Coming soon! My LinkedIn had 628k in the month of May. Something special is happening on the content side. Goal of the week: Get deal flow back up again. What I don’t really talk about much is this is nothing new for us. Over the last 4 years I’ve been looking at buying a biz. This has happened multiple times. As Acquirer/Operators we need to be so sure on the deal. On so many levels. That we are looking for something truly special. #shopify

The world #Last Blockbuster is located at 211 Northeast Revere Avenue #3, Bend, OR 97701. In 1998, Blockbuster had almost $4 billion in revenue, the world biggest video store. That same year Netflix was founded. A year later, Netflix started a subscription service. A year after that Blockbuster had the opportunity to buy Netflix for a mere $50 million and #declined. Ten years later, Blockbuster files for bankruptcy, valued at only $24 million. That same year, 12 years old Netflix had over 158 million subscribers and a litlte over $2 billion in revenue, with a market cap of over $3.5 billion. Today, there is only one #Blockbuster store left in the world, and it is available for rent on the Airbnb platform for those of us who might be nostalgic about renting VHS tapes in its heyday when Blockbuster had more than 9,090 stores worldwide in the 90s. 👉"The last Blockbuster" on the #Airbnb site: https://lnkd.in/gnMmY3JR Today, #Netflix has over 269 million subscribers and over $33 billion in revenue. Blockbuster could have had all of this for a mere $50 million 24 years ago but declined. Blockbuster went from over 9,090 stores worldwide to only #one store in Bend, OR. 👇Please add in the comment below what lessons we all should learn about the fate of Blockbuster in reference to #emergingtechnology?

This was the sign on the Redbox machine at the Walmart by my house this morning. Man... times are changing. End of an era is almost certainly here for one of my favorite weekend rituals back in the day. Does anyone else remember walking up to a Redbox on a Friday night, after grabbing a Dominoes Pizza to rent Redbox and Chill? (Yes that was a thing before Netflix) There was something so awesome, about scrolling through those titles on that small screen, sometimes needing that really weird red screen flap to stop the sun from hitting glass so you could see... At its height, @Redbox had more than 40,000 kiosks across the U.S. after finding its place in the void left by the fading Blockbuster and not yet matured Netflix. Literally... for just $1 a night, you could grab the latest blockbuster or indie hit and drop it off the next day with almost zero hassle. Founded in 2002, Redbox started as a subsidiary of McDonald's, believe it or not, as an experiment to drive foot traffic to their restaurants. A little-known fact: Redbox didn’t just stop at DVDs. They briefly ventured into video game rentals and even tried their hand at online streaming. However, competition from Netflix and the digital age caught up. Streaming services, with their instant access and endless libraries, slowly eroded Redbox’s business model, and by the late 2010s, the writing was on the wall. #Nostalgia #Redbox #MovieNight #Flashback #TechEvolution Redbox Entertainment Inc.

More on Fallout, I’ve been watching the series and the buzz around it is positive with a lot of people tuning in, so it looks like Amazon has a hit on their hands. This, Invincible, The Boys…they are building a nice little portfolio of adult targeted action dramas. If you’re wondering, these deals weren’t signed yesterday, many are signed a year to 6 months ago, essentially gambling that this property will be a hit. These licensees designed and produced products hoping for a hit property, and if you look at the usual track record for live action adaptations, the record is not great (Even Avatar: The Last Airbender, a solid property and massive fanbase is lukewarm on its second LA attempt.) Usually after release there will be a PR push announcing licensees and you can bet more people are asking for the license now. It’s an interesting property, it’s got good visuals, and a friendly 50’s/yet post-apocalyptic aesthetic that is familiar and inviting to audiences. It’s also interesting that Amazon MGM secured the merchandise rights, maybe through negotiation, or maybe Bethesda didn’t want to bother with merchandising anymore (they had some bad deals in the past). The weirdest thing to me is why Microsoft doesn’t create a merchandising division for all the IP it owns (Mojang, Activision/Blizzard/Bethesda, I can’t even list them all). https://lnkd.in/eBndBQ3p
