Social mine closure planning is a process that involves addressing the social and economic impacts on surrounding communities and stakeholders in preparation for when the mine closes. This planning is integrated during the Life of Mine. Ideally, a mine should have a mine closure strategy which is updated during the mine operation focusing on sustainable socio-economic development on ensuring that communities are not adversely affected once mining operations cease. Digby Wells Environmental we understand that successful mine closure goes beyond environmental remediation. It requires a comprehensive approach that integrates social, economic, and cultural considerations. With decades of experience, we are at the forefront of Social Mine Closure Planning, ensuring that mining operations leave a positive legacy for surrounding communities. Our multidisciplinary team brings together experts in social science, economics, environmental management, and community engagement. Partner with Digby Wells Environment to ensure that your mine closure is not just an end, but a new beginning for the communities and ecosystems that have supported your operations. Let us help you leave a lasting, positive legacy. #mining #socialImpacts #closure #EIA #StakeholderEngagement

Machines, Children & Clouds - The evolution of mine closure in South Africa Part 2 Last week I only gave you a small teaser on what the evolution of mine closure activities looked like in South Africa over the past 100 years or so. I identified five main stages: 1. Pre-1970s: Limited Concern 2. 1970s to 1990s: Environmental Awareness 3. Late 1990s to Early 2000s: Strengthening Legislative and Regulatory Framework 4. Mid-2000s to 2010s: Improved Mine Closure Practices 5. Late 2010s to Present: Integrated Approach and Social Responsibility Today I will be discussing the first stage, pre-1970. Limited concern: The period before 1970 marked a critical juncture in the development of mine rehabilitation practices in South Africa. It was an era characterised by unbridled industrial expansion, driven by a relentless pursuit of economic growth and self-sufficiency. The mining industry, which had been a cornerstone of the South African economy since the mid-1800s, experienced rapid growth to meet the soaring demand for raw materials. However, this phase of industrial prosperity came at a significant cost to the environment and local communities. With little to no regulatory oversight or guidelines in place, mining activities were conducted with scant regard for their environmental and social impacts. The singular focus on maximising profits and production led to widespread neglect of sustainable mining practices and a disregard for the long-term consequences of mining operations. This historical context serves as a stark reminder of the importance of striking a balance between economic development and environmental stewardship. It highlights the need for a comprehensive regulatory framework that holds mining companies accountable for their actions and ensures the adoption of responsible mining practices. The pre-1970 era also underscores the importance of stakeholder engagement and community involvement in the mining sector. By failing to consider the interests and well-being of local communities, the mining industry sowed the seeds of conflict and mistrust, which would later hinder efforts towards effective mine rehabilitation and closure. As South Africa continues to evolve its mine rehabilitation practices, it is essential to learn from the lessons of this pivotal period. By acknowledging the shortcomings of the past and embracing a more holistic approach that prioritises sustainability, social responsibility, and stakeholder engagement, the country can pave the way for a more responsible and successful mining industry that balances economic growth with environmental stewardship and community well-being.

A maiden soil sampling program at our Forrestania Project, WA has outlines four high priority large-scale lithium anomalies, up to 4,200m in length and 500m width. Additionally, results from infill and extensional soil sampling at our Parker Dome Project, confirm and extend multiple, large-scale, high priority lithium anomalies. Results from both projects include multiple lithium anomalies with +100ppm Li2O signatures, supported by key pathfinder elements. A low-cost, high-impact follow-up exploration approach is planned to build upon early successes and further enhance the prospectivity of the lithium targets and, at the same time, maximise the options for on-going funding of the projects. Managing Director and CEO, Neil Marston commented, “The Company is excited by our latest soil sampling program which has identified four, new lithium anomalies at our Forrestania Project, located just a few kilometres southeast of the recently commissioned world class Mt Holland lithium mine and concentrator. “These results continue to improve the potential of Flynn’s portfolio of lithiumgold projects in Western Australia. With our focus on the Company’s gold and critical mineral assets in Tasmania, we will actively assess corporate and potential joint venture opportunities for these lithium assets.” Read the full ASX announcement: https://lnkd.in/gicvtz-g #FG1 #lithium #exploration

In the ever-evolving world of mining, where environmental, social, and governance (#ESG) considerations are not just buzzwords but pivotal elements of our operations, the concept of #mine #closure is undergoing a revolutionary shift. No longer is the closure of a mine seen as the final act in the mining lifecycle; instead, it represents a gateway to untapped opportunities and sustainable legacies. Imagine beginning with the end in mind, where #mine #planning integrates closure considerations to unlock opportunities right from the start. From converting #mine #waste into #commercial #products to repurposing closed #landforms and fostering #resilient #economies in #local #communities, the possibilities are endless. These initiatives not only ensure environmental stewardship but also contribute to the socio-economic wellbeing of communities long after mining operations cease. The future of #competitive mine closure lies in harnessing National Environments, nurturing Business Ecosystems, and leveraging Organizational Capabilities. It's about creating value that outlasts the mine itself. The journey towards realizing these opportunities requires a collective effort. It challenges mine planners and stakeholders to adopt a long-term view, recognizing the life of a mine as a continuum of opportunities rather than a finite sequence of events. As we unlock and exploit these opportunities, we pave the way for a market shift that embraces mine closure not just as an obligation but as a cornerstone of sustainable mining practices. A thank you to Malcolm Shang who has introduced me to some great work being carried out by CRC TiME. Their work is both thought provoking, relevant and insightful. #MineClosure #SustainableMining #ESG #InnovationInMining #FutureOfMining #MinePlanning #NationalEnvironment #BusinessEcosystem #OrganisationalCapability

Financial surety instrument for closure - Listen to the video posted by Mining Doc. #mining #mineclosure #financialsurety The IRMA standard (IRMA Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance ) includes in its requirements 2.6.4.1 similar provisions for mine reclamation, closure and post-closure, which is considered "critical". This instrument shall be: a) Independently guaranteed, reliable, and readily liquid; b) Reviewed by third-party analysts, using accepted accounting methods, at least every five years or when there is a significant change to the mine plan; c) In place before ground disturbance begins; and d) Sufficient to cover the reclamation and closure expenses for the period until the next financial surety review is completed. However to fully comply with this critical requirement remains a challenge for the mining companies! Check the audit reports issued by IRMA on its webpage - check the comments!
